Sometimes you just need a thick heavy bass sound. Over the last few months, I’ve gotten a few requests for some heavy bass sounds. While working on one of my tracks called “Part of Me,” I programmed a bass sound that I liked quite a bit, and for this installment of my Free Weekly Ableton Live Rack series, I have modified that particular bass sound.
I really appreciate Ableton’s Analog synth for its deep sound sculpting potential and really nice filter section. It’s a synth that seems to get deeper and deeper every time I load it up. This Ableton Live Instrument Rack was created with the idea of thick bass sounds in mind. I used both oscillators, one a saw wave the other a square wave tuned an octave lower. There’s a slight detuning to thicken up the sound and a bunch of effects stringed together, most notably, The Ableton Amp plug in. Luckily and to my surprise, this rack winds up being more than just a bass sound. Follow along in the video below as I take you through the rack and show how it can be sculpted into heavy bass sounds, pleasing chords/ pads, and soaring leads.
Twitch To Ableton Live Translator
More from Novation with the news of a Twitch to Ableton Live Translation application. This takes the Novation Twitch – DJ control surface with audio interface, and makes it play nicely with Abletons Live software. This translation layer appears to be built using MAX/MSP an advanced MIDI manipulation application – indeed, the source-code is freely available so the tweakers can modify the application to do what they wish. Available for download now from the Novation website (Mac and PC).
Novation has created an application that allows users to set up and use the TWITCH to control parameters in Ableton Live (and any other MIDI compatible DJ software).The purpose of this software is to receive ‘raw’ MIDI messages generated by the TWITCH hardware and ‘translate’ them into MIDI messages that can be learned to parameters in Ableton LIve. TWITCH Translator for Live is not intended to be a solution to provide a universal DJ mapping for Live. Every Live user will want to use TWITCH in a slightly different way to another, so this allows a blank starting point to map to parameters in Live in any way you want. This application has been created using Cycling 74 Max/MSP software. This means that every user is able to run this application regardless of whether they own Max/MSP, but users of Max/MSP are able to open the ‘source code’ to edit and tweak to their own preference.

Gameboy Glitches and Synth: Free Ableton Live Rack
The Nintendo Gameboy has been kept alive thanks to producers around the world who appreciate its 8 bit gritty goodness. Today is an exciting day for me, it marks six months of releasing these Ableton Live Racks for your downloading pleasure. I want to thank you for your support and kind words, it means a lot to me and has made this a truly exciting project to work on.
A big reason I do this is to meet new people and share ideas and music with people I would otherwise have no way of reaching; I thought that this 26th Ableton Rack should reflect that.
One great soldier of information in the electronic music community is Tom who writes the blog Waveformless. The motto of the site is a “Freeform discussion of electronic music and the techniques and gear used in making it.” I highly recommend checking it out and exploring the vast information from synthesizer news to free sample Fridays. This weeks Free Ableton Live Rack was created using some of Tom’s free samples. Thanks to Tom for sharing these samples and letting me rack them up for everybody’s enjoyment!
I’m not going to pretend I know anything about the SQ-80, I’ve never touched one in my life, but therein lies the beauty of the internet. Tom supplied us with a bunch of samples from the “Hush” preset, as well as a sample of the synth powering down. From there I have merely thrown the samples into Live’s Sampler and mapped out some choice macro knobs. The result is something that I hope you will find useful. (If nothing else, play around with the notes on the extreme high end of the keyboard. That’s where the samples of the SQ-80 being powered down are, and the sounds I am most excited to use in my own productions. Great call on adding that sample, Tom!)

This Ableton Live Rack was created by sampling my piano with the Singing Fingers iPad app and then sampling that into Ableton Live. The result is a glitchy piano pad type sound. Enjoy!
I’ve been experimenting with various apps on the iPad, and one of my favorite ones is a sampling app called Singing Fingers. This app records sound as you draw on the iPad with your finger. You then play the sounds back by tracing over what you have drawn. The sound changes depending on how fast and which direct you move your finger. It’s very easy to use, creates interesting sounds, and is fun. So, I decided to record some notes from my piano (the same piano from my reverse piano rack) into the app, and then I sampled the result into Ableton. By nature, the app has a granular-glitch type sound to it, and this is pretty evident in the sound of the rack I have created, “AfroDJMac’s Glitched Piano.” Have fun with it!

Some unique features:
- Aftertouch. Keybed quality is paramount for obvious reasons. What’s typically missing, for those who like it, is aftertouch support, available here.
- Full DAW control. Available on the Axiom but previously missing on Novation’s offering, you get 8 knobs, 9 faders and buttons, and an LCD for controlling your DAW. (Only one fader on the 25-key model, since all of that wouldn’t fit.
- Automap. It wouldn’t be a Novation keyboard without the company’s Automap feature. Whether that’s good or not depends on whether you like the functionality; I’ve tended to find it a bit fiddly at times, though the implementation with Propellerheads’ Reason is fantastic. (Hosts are a big part of the variable here.)
- Pads that do more. This one’s rather interesting: you get drum pads set up to do arpeggios, rolls, and Ableton Live clip launching. You could do that with any pads, but neat to see it on the keyboard, and I’m curious to learn more about the specific implementation.
