The LFO of a Korg Monotron is synchronized to the trigger output of a Roland TR-626 drum machine. The retrigger of the Monotron LFO is the red wire. The sync mod is done like shown here: http://stevewoodward.posterous.com/lfo-reset-point-on-korg-monotron

In this video the TR-626 is started and stopped. The rhythm rate is also varied.

Yamaha CS-5 and Roland TR-606 Demo

Here is a demo of the Yamaha CS-5 analog monosynth and the Roland TR-606 analog drum machine. The Yamaha is being triggered via one of the trigger outs on the 606. The CS-5 has an envelope follower of sorts on it’s audio in and that is what I ran the trigger into. Adjusting the gain on the audio-in allows for some odd timing on the pulses; it’s a neat effect.

The CS-5 is a single-oscillator monophonic analog synthesizer with classic filter, envelope and modulation controls. It features 37 full-sized keys, a multi-mode 12 dB/Oct resonant filter, an LFO with sample and hold, and an external audio input you can route through the VCF or VCA sections. The CS-5 is a very flexible and modulate-able analog synth that is quite capable of warm analog bass and bubbly synth effects! The absence of patch storage, MIDI and velocity are just reminders that the CS-5 is old

As you can hear in the video, the CS-5 excels at resonant sounds. The all-black CS synths are easily some of the cleanest sounding vintage synths; this sort of works against them in some ways as people seem to gravitate to the dirty or muffled (“organic”, bleh) synths of that era. It’s sound sits well next to a Roland synth of the same vintage

Some of the things to explore on the EMW-200:

The Delay module on the EMW-200 uses a special design that emulates a vintage echo chamber, it is very usefull and has controls for the Delay Time, Repetition (regeneration) and Effect Mix.

The Switch module on the EMW-200 (as on the EML-200) is an analog switch circuit that works intercalating two audio signals. These singals enters the module thru the A (11) and B (14) inputs, which has a gain control associated with each one. The switching frequency can be controlled by the SW. FREQ. potentiometer and the time relation between the two signals can be controlled by the A/B ON TIME control.

There are two filters on the EMW-200 and they are of the exact same type found on the EML-200, one is a Highpass and the other is a Lowpass filter, both are 6db/oct. These filters give a very characteristic tone to the synthesizer sound, almost like an effect that dips things into a dark or misty athmosphere. They are not usual filters as we are used to see, they are simple and have unusual characteristics, but their simplicity turns out to be a powerfull feature and at some extend gives to this machine its sound personality.

The Wave Shaper on the EMW-200 is a module composed of 4 submodules, a sample & hold (SAMPLER), an oscillator with pulse width control, an A/D (Attack/Decay) generator and a Ring Modulator. Beyond that there is a switching system that selects 4 ways to feed the modulation input of the ring modulator module and a manual trigger for the attack/decay generator.
On our EMW-200 we made a simple upgrade adding a switch to configure the pulse input (20) to work as a pulse output from the internal oscillator or to allow the attack/decay generator and the sample & hold to be triggered by an external pulse.
On this module we also replaced the mechanical rotary switch with a digital controlled relay system.

Roland Juno-60 and LinnDrum in an 80’s Hi-NRG Demo

Here is a demo with the Juno 60 and LinnDrum doing some 80’s-ish, HI-NRG drums and basslines. The two were ran through a Roland MMP-2 Preamp/Compressor, then the SPDIF of that went straight into my Allen & Heath Xone DX.

The Linndrum hits extremely hard and is a complete joy to use. The Juno-60 is locking onto the trigger out of the Linn which allows for quick timing on basslines.

This of course sounds like quite a lot to deal with for a single rack mount unit, but as the video will demonstrate, an iPad can be used to control the action. While this is good news for quick patch selection (and of course effects can be added for good measure from the expected plethora of options that Roland have long excelled at providing), it comes into its own with the Integra-7’s new Motion Surround technology. You can now use the iPad to position different instruments in your arrangement, creating astonishing 3D sonic images.

Bleepy patched with Analogue System’s rs450 CV Recorder + Cwejman MMF-2 Stereo Multimode Filter

Here’s a patch showing the new Analogue Systems rs450 CV Recorder/Sequencer and the Cwejman MMF-2 Stereo Multi-mode Filter module. The Cwejman MMF-2 is filtering a basic saw wave bass from the Cwejman VCO-2RM running into a version of lowpass on the MMF-2. The kick and snare were created using Analogue Systems modules. The sixteenth note percussion is a modulated Cyndustries Zeroscillator through a Cwejman VCA, opened by the Cyndustries Four Transients module.

They’ve pre-recorded a few CV sequences into the incredible new Analogue Systems rs450 CV Recorder/Sequencer. It’s being clocked by an A.S. rs200 sequencer (which is running the whole patch actually). They are switching between four or five preset sequences which in turn is controlling the pitch of a Cwejman RES-4 module.

The rhythms for this patch are derived from the 4ms Shuffling Clock Multiplier and we’re also using a 4ms PEG module as a slow modulation source for the MMF-2. Rad!

Zoë Blade was lucky enough to be treated to a demo of Rebel Technologies’ Stoixeia at the Brighton Mini Maker Faire 2012.

Στοιχεῖα is a dual Euclidean Sequencer. It algorithmically generates rhythmic sequences from an input trigger signal. The name (Στοιχεῖα, Stoicheia, or Elements) comes from the title of Euclid’s book Elements in which the algorithm was first described.

Synare and WerkBench wake up the neighbors!

Here we are using WerkBench to make a groove using sounds from a late-1970’s analog drum synth known as the Synare 3.

The Star Instruments Synare is most famous for its use on disco records as a simple ‘tom-tom’ sound (the first sound I play in this video). Despite its cheesy historical use, the Synare actually a beastly little analog synth with two oscillators (with noise and LFO modes respectively), a self oscilating low-pass filter, and envelopes for filter and volume. I only scratch the surface in this video.

WerkBench is a tool for crafting rhythmic loops from any source material in real-time. WerkBench is great for grabbing sounds on the fly from analog synths that lack patch memory (like the Synare, Monotron, or any modular rig).

Additional exploration of some of the most popular iPad soft synths out there right now:

I have not yet accommodated after 3 months (I barely used it the iPad for music, most of the time only for business – during this time), with this style of making music on iPad :) So, excuse some nonsense hand movement!
Also, when I’m trying to play several synths (more than 3 at same time), pops and glitches appear (I have iPad 2 16 Gb) because of the processor, but I think that the iPad will become in future a powerful tool for musicians.
I am already thinking to use it in my next concert or albums!
