BoomComb, a MIDI tuneable comb filter

July 28, 2010 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on BoomComb, a MIDI tuneable comb filter

Boomplug has released BoomComb, a MIDI tuneable comb filter perfect for creating similar effects to a flanger or for spicing up synthetic drums.

Now you may ask what is a comb filter? Well a comb filter a delay based effect where it feedsback a delayed version of itself. Because of this it can create an effect similar to a flanger and can also give resonation type effects. The delay time of the comb is specified in Hz rather than time this allows the delay time can also be set via MIDI input from the key pressed and the pitch can also be bent using the pitch wheel, this allows the effect to be played like an instrument.

In the feedback loop of the effect is a damping filter which allows you to soften the sound of the comb. There is also Saturation in the feedback loop which can also be overdriven to really dirty up the sound. You can also control how much of signal is feedback and with more feedback the effect will resonate more.

Finally the the input to the comb can mixed mixed with the output of the comb and is set by the dry/wet knob.

  • Custom GUI designed by Leonard “paniq” Ritter.
  • Uses custom GUI Framework using the latest Windows Drawing API.

BoomComb is available to download as a freeware VST effect plug-in for Windows. It comes in two versions:

DUY has released Z-Room, a free reverb effect for RTAS, MAS, VST and Audiosuite.

Email address required for the free download. Details on Z-Room below.

Features:

  • High quality density and diffusion provide an unparalleled sound quality.
  • Total control over parameters which had never been available to the user before, with a friendly and intuitive user interface.
  • Three modes: Deluxe, Economy and Earlies. The second allows to free processing time, and the third focuses the strength of the algorithm on the processing of Early Reflections.
  • An exclusive Rehearsal Mode allows you to set the parameters while hearing the real impulse response of the reverb. This is one of the finest tools to evaluate the quality of the reverb.
  • You can choose between several room responses (reverse, gate, hall, room, stage…). All these values can be modified with the Stretch and Pre-delay parameters.
  • Processing time is freed when you choose not to include Early Reflections.
  • Internal 64-bit processing.
  • Independent mixing controls for each of the three selectable bands, as well as for the Direct, Early Reflections and Reverb signals.
  • Total control over the iteration depth, with six levels of calculation.
  • Over 50 presets are included.
  • Z-Room is the only reverb that allows you to control the time base of the reverb’s algorithm.
  • Visualization of the Direct, Early Reflections and Reverb signals in the time domain.

Airwindows has released ButterComp, a digital compressor effect plug-in for Mac.

ButterComp, digital compressor effect

Like Desk, rather than apply color to the sound, ButterComp does its thing by using a better algorithm, a peculiar approach to compression that hasn’t been done before to my knowledge. Some bits of it are inspired by remarks from Alexey Vaneev, and some bits of it are strange Airwindows things he knows nothing of :) the upshot is, this compressor produces virtually no high frequency hash, and sounds bloom out of it in a delicious way.

ButterComp is available to purchase as an Audio Unit effect plug-in for Mac, priced at $59.99 USD.

Sound effect synth for iPhone

July 4, 2010 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Sound effect synth for iPhone

MendelSynth (App Store link) is a sound effect synthesizer that’s designed to be a “fun exploration and discovery tool.”

MendelSynth is based on a genetic algorithm — sounds are synthesized from simulated genomes. New sounds are made from old by mutating and cross breeding their genomes.

In the interface, genomes are represented by movable circular buttons that can be played by tapping on them. Double tapping on a button creates six new mutated child sounds arranged around the parent. Dragging one button on top of another creates five new children that inherit features from both parents.

Child sounds are often not very interesting (or worse!), but with patience you can achieve pleasing effects. One strategy is to select the children with the most desirable features, then create children from those and repeat the process until you find something you like.

Features:

  • A library of 250 seed sounds.
  • Save synthesized audio to a file and send by email.
  • Mutation rate and parameter variability controls.
  • Individual volume, pitch and tempo controls for each genome.
  • A “gene pool” where favorite genomes can be saved and retrieved.

MendelSynth sells for $2.99.

Demo of a new effect plug-in from Expert Sleepers – Spectral Conquest

July 2, 2010 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Demo of a new effect plug-in from Expert Sleepers – Spectral Conquest

Expert Sleepers announce the release of a new plug-in for both Windows and Mac OS X – Spectral Conquest v1.0.0.
Spectral Conquest is an effect plug-in that lets you directly manipulate the frequency spectrum of audio signals.

The incoming signal is analysed via a FFT (Fast Fourier Transform), resulting in the familiar spectrum plot where the full audio spectrum is split into a number of narrow frequency bands. The outgoing audio is then regenerated by an Inverse FFT. The interesting bit is that the plug-in lets you modify the frequency spectrum in between.

Spectral Conquest allows you to modify the spectrum in two ways:
– By setting a multiplier for each frequency band. You can simply draw out the multipliers in the GUI.
– By applying a script to the spectrum. Some basic scripts are included with the plug-in to perform operations such as filtering and gating, but you can also write scripts yourself to do whatever you like.
