Marc Almond celebrates 30 years as an artist
“Varieté” is Marc Almond’s first complete album of self-written songs since “Open All Night”, launched over a decade ago. The first 3000 copies of the album will be released in a limited edition digipak with an exclusive 7-tracks bonus acoustic CD featuring additional unreleased tracks and a 16 pages booklet, while the regular editon includes CD1 only. 2010 being Almond’s 30th year in business as a recording artist, the album “Varieté” revisits the eras of his personal and musical life providing an insight into what defines him as a performer.
The Ocean Beach Digital DB-1 Drawbar Module
The Ocean Beach Digital DB-1 Drawbar Module is an add-on MIDI drawbar module, designed specifically for Nord keyboards:
The Ocean Beach Digital DB-1 Drawbar Module already knows how to send the right commands for your Nord. The sliders have the exact same spacing as the drawbars on a B-3, and they move the same distance, all in a very small package that fits nicely on top of your Nord. It has an extra set of MIDI jacks so you don’t lose the ability to communicate with other gear. It even has a MIDI merge function built-in, so you can use a second keyboard controller as a lower organ manual. You can use one DB-1 Drawbar Module to control both manuals, or you can use two of them together to have dedicated drawbars for upper and lower manual. No other drawbar controller does all that.
It supports the Nord Electro, Electro 2, Electro3, Stage, Stage EX, and the C1 & C2 organs.
The Ocean Beach Digital DB-1 Drawbar Module is expected to ship soon and sell for $279.
Old synth poppers IRIS are back
American electronic pop/rock act Iris are back. The band’s fifth studio album “Blacklight” is scheduled to be released on September 3, 2010. You may also expect an exclusive limited single to be released as appetizer for the actual album. The new album is the follow-up to “Hydra” which was released in 2008. Formed by Reagan Jones and Mat Morris in 1993 the band hit the synthpop scene by surprise with their outstanding debut “Disconnect”. After that first album Matthew Morris was replaced with Andrew Sega who pushed the band’s sound into a more experimental electronic direction.
Get yourself high
For the music video “Get Yourself High”, the Chemical brothers turned to director Joseph Kahn to create a music video via some creative video editing.
“Get Yourself High” was a bonus track on The Chemical Brothers’ Singles 93-03 collection, and features Canadian rapper k-os. Kahn took the classic kung fu movie “2 Champions of Shaolin“, and turned the 1982 movie into a superb music video, which accompanies the song perfectly.
Woodstock of electronic music is here again
The electro-music festival, known as the “Woodstock of electronic music,” is the world’s premiere event for experimental electronic music. This year’s event features three mind-bending days of innovative electronic music concerts, seminars, workshops, demonstrations, jam sessions, video art, a laptop battle, and a swap-meet. Action starts at 12 noon on Friday, September 10 and runs until after midnight on September 12. Musical activities will be running continuously throughout the three days of the festival.
electro-music 2010 takes place at the Greenkill Retreat Center in Huguenot, New York. On-site lodging and meals are available. Tickets range from $25 for a single day to $325 for a 3-day pass including meals and lodging.

Introducing the Casio inspired Mothman Z3000
Justin Robert launches Mothman Z3000, a virtual synth for Windows that is inspired by the Casio CZ-3000.
It also has the stereo chorus, noise and LFO just like the original CZ-3000. Also, there’s an added switchable velocity feature that gives greater expression than the original CZ, and an added analog style filter on DCA2 to give even more sound options. You can also pan the different DCOs to give more stereo fx. But other than that, I kept it pretty faithful to the original synth.
There are 64 preset slots with 18 presets already created. The sound of this synth is very similar to the real thing. Real phase distortion synthesis is used, real eight point envelopes and a cool “Mothman” design.
“It’s a 16 voice polyphonic synthesizer that features two Phase Distortion DCOs, two DCWs, and two DCAs all six feature the famous 8 point envelope section that made the CZ synthesizer so famous. You have the ability to make some of the most complex waveforms you’ve ever heard.”

Space analog monster
Studio Electronics created a synthesizer a while ago, very much inspired by the movie 2001: A space Odyssey, and Hal 9000′s ominous glow. This huge (38 pounds) synth is an anlogue monster, with a beautiful white and black case, and the warm, blue glow of it’s lights makes it absolutely stunning.
The Orion was was custom built for an Argentine gentleman named Antoine de Castellane. Internally, it was a CODE 8 fitted with an overdrive and both ARP 2600 and Yamaha CS80 filters. Antoine did the design of the “space case” on his end, and Tim Caswell did the rest. Antoine has both of the only two in existence.
Here is Studio Electonics’ page on the Orion. They are available to anyone, but very expensive. Still, there would definitely be one of these in my dream studio.

Last Saturday, chipmusic was presented in these two ways by Fox News – perhaps the worst news channel in the world? Br1ght Pr1mate performed live and talked about chiptune. Although the music is not my cup of tea, I think the clips are definitely worth watching because the hosts are perfect OMG-WTF-LOL-journalists, with a target audience that think like this. The hosts seem to think that chipmusic is 10 people making music in Pacman, which was fun to laugh at for a decade but is pretty tiresome now, really. Somehow it makes me think of when John Cage appeared on TV in 1960, playing along with the role of being a clown instead of a pretentious composer. Br1ght Pr1mate are aware that they take a similar role in the Fox News show.
