Experimental – Minute of Listening

May 21, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Experimental – Minute of Listening

Minute of Listening is a creative learning project which encourages pupils and teachers to engage in 60 seconds of focused listening per day. The project is aimed at developing listening skills and introducing children to a wide range of new sounds. It is also anticipated that Minute of Listening will encourage creative thinking, class discussion and an inquisitive approach to aural experiences.

The project has emerged from Sound and Music’s aspiration to promote the joys and rewards of listening, and as a response to current debate around creativity and the importance of listening in a child’s learning and development.

The Little MIDI Machine gets upgraded

May 21, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on The Little MIDI Machine gets upgraded

Synthetic Bits has announced a major update to its free MIDI step sequencer for iOS, Little MIDI Machine.

Little MIDI Machine v2 was just submitted to the App Store and is not yet available. Here’s an overview of Little MIDI Machine v2 Features:

  • Now a universal app, supports iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch
  • CoreMIDI support, including network MIDI
  • MIDI clock sync for both Line 6 and CoreMIDI, send and receive
  • New random sequence mode
  • Updated graphics/UI
  • Still free

If you’re not familiar with Little MIDI Machine, it’s one of the more wicked freebies available for iOS musicians. It lets you create two independent sequences in classic step sequencing style:

  • Sequences can be any length
  • Sequences can run forwards or backwards, and can be ‘played’ in realtime
  • Sequences can by synced to clock at three different rates
  • Note length can be controlled for the entire sequence
  • Sequences can control pitch and velocity
  • Sequences can be directed to different MIDI channels

The new features should open up a lot of potential for the app, especially the ability to sync to other hardware or apps via CoreMIDI.

Free nice sampled based drum machine

May 21, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Free nice sampled based drum machine

Designers Ola Wistedt and Mats Lindfors have released TheDrumSource v1.0, a new sample based drum machine instrument for Windows.

Features:

  • Built in sample browser suited for a easy workflow when working with samples. And almost all of TheDrumSource’s functions is still available while browsing.
  • Built in sequencer that has 24 sequences for your patterns. The patterns are of the 16-step bar type
  • Support for many sample formats (including 24 bit samples): WAV, AIFF, AIFC, AU, SND, RAW, PAF, IFF, SVX, SF, VOC, W64, MAT4, MAT5, PVF, XI, HTK, CAF, SD2, FLAC, OGG.
  • A GUI that can be resized to suit you screen.
  • A quick button to change the next and previous sample in current directory of the selected sample.
  • A stereo output channel for each drum. And a mode to mix down all channels temporary into one stereo channel for quick tests to get you up and running a little bit faster on some hosts.
  • The SYNC mode. The sequencer is synced by the host (DAW) and you control which of the 24 track to be played with MIDI (octave 2 and 3).
  • The MIDI mode. The samples can be played through midi keyboard (octave 1) with the sequencer turned off.
  • The RUN mode. Lets you play around with the TheDrumsource sequencer when your host (DAW) is not running.
  • Clean interface so you don’t get distracted in your creative work. TheDrumsource uses context menus to make this possible.

TheDrumSource is a free download.

Working and pushing the LiveWire Chaos computer

May 21, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Working and pushing the LiveWire Chaos computer

The new Livewire Chaos Computer is an expandable system using complex mathematical functions to produce multiple chaotic CV outputs.

CORE CHAOS ENGINE

The heart of the system is the Core Chaos Engine, which utilizes dual 32-bit Chaos Processing Units (or ‘CPU’s) and a x-modulo feedback parity tree to produce 2 sets of 4 related but distinctly unique random stepped voltage outputs. The randomness of the outputs (ranging from cyclical conformity to total anarchy) is controlled by 16 probability switches, which determine the structure of the x-modulo parity tree. Each of the 8 outputs varies based on coefficients determining specific weighting and distribution.

RANDOM GATES

The Random Gate expansion module provides addtional 16 outputs (8 per CPU) each with unique random gate patterns. This module would be very useful in triggering rhytmically related random events. Up to 8 Random Gate expanders can be added for up to 64 distinctly separate outputs.

ANALOGUE COMPUTATION

The Analogue Computation expansion module selects 2 variables, 1 each from the 4 random stepped voltages of both Core Chaos Engine CPUs. These variables are then processed through 8 mathemathical operators providing a further 8 related, but unique random CV outputs.

In this video:

Here again is the prototype Livewire Chaos Computer eurorack module, this time with the highly respected Livewire Audio Frequency Generator and FrequenSteiner modules. We have the Chaos Computer synced with the Metasonix D-1000 for some sweet analog rhythm.

Sampling Inside the Reason Rack

May 20, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Sampling Inside the Reason Rack

Sampling isn’t always about sticking a mic in front of your dog to turn his bark into your next bass lead. Sometimes the best stuff you can sample is inside the Reason rack. Why would you want to do this if it’s already in Reason? There’s plenty of reasons and Mattias Häggström Gerdt will show you the why’s and how’s.
