Awesome site for synths and effects made with Synthedit
Simple Media announced their new website update. to coincide with the update they’re releasing two new free VSTi instruments, Striker and Voc-Two, and two new products retro-gsx and Cathedral.
The instruments and effects that appear on this page have been created using Synthedit. Synthedit is a tremendously powerful tool for creating software synthesizers, samplers and effects. The quality of software it can be used to create can rival software produced by high profile commercial developers. The package itself is very versatile, capable of recreating a number of different synthesis techniques from simple sample playback and analog modelling right through to FM and physical modelling.
Please note all instruments and effects are currently PC(Windows) only. This is due to the fact that Synthedit currently only exports VST dll files for Windows.
The two free VSti’s Striker is a physical modelling instrument created to reproduce the sounds of various types of tuned percussion such as marimbas, vibraphones and other instruments where a hammer or mallet strikes a block where as Voc-Two allows you to create realistic string ensemble and choir sounds without the use of samples. It includes a wide range of controls over the source sound generation and the morphable formant filter making it a surprisingly flexible instrument for creating rich and atmospheric pads and realistic ensemble sounds. The two new products are retro-gsx is a new addtion to the SID inspired synths retro-gs01 & retro-gs02 where as Cathedral is being hailed as a new approach to a pipe organ. Since May 1st a mysterious video has been circulating within Depeche Mode circles. Posted on YouTube by the ‘thinlinestaff’ account, it shows the inside of what could be Alan Wilder’s UK estate, with an audio loop of ‘Clean’ as soundtrack. Oh, and guess who pops up at around 55 seconds into the 1:07 minute long video? Yep, the boss himself.
SoundWorks Collection: “The Lost Thing”
The story of “The Lost Thing” is about a boy who discovers a bizarre looking creature while out collecting bottle tops at the beach. Having guessed it is lost, he tries to find out who owns it or where it belongs, but is met with mute indifference from everyone else, who barely notice its presence, each unwilling to entertain this uninvited interruption to their day to day lives. For reasons he does not explain, the boy empathises with the creature, and sets out to find a ‘place’ for it.
Supervising Sound Editor and Sound Designer John Kassab discusses his extensive work on this animated masterpiece bringing to life the world of the Lost Thing.
Directors Shaun Tan and Andrew Ruhemann were also winners for Best Animated Short Film for “The Lost Thing” at the 83rd Academy Awards in 2011.

Chip Tune aficionados and video game lovers rejoice; this weeks Ableton Live instrument rack was created with the sound card of a Nintendo Entertainment System, accessed via WayFar’s MidiNES. (awesome piece of gear… http://www.wayfar.net ) It contains a pulse wave channel and a triangle wave channel. True to the original NES with some extra features. Very warm, familiar, gritty, dirty, and nostalgic.
Dirty, lo-fi, 8-bit, nostalgic. This weeks Ableton Live Rack was created with the sound card of a Nintendo Entertainment System. Maybe it’s just because I grew up spending more time playing video games than I’d ever admit, but the bleeps and blips that come from this magical machine have a warmth and familiarity that hits home. The samples that make up the virtual instrument were made by connecting a MidiNES cartridge to a Nintendo and sampling certain notes.First, allow me to explain how the Nintendo’s sound engine works… There are five channels in total: 2 pulse wave channels, 1 triangle wave channel, a noise channel, and a sample channel. They are all monophonic, but each can play simultaneously, for a total of five sounds at once. Considering the limitations of the NES, listen back to the music from some games (like Super Mario Bros. or The Legend of Zelda for example) and I think you’ll agree, it’s quite a show of the composer’s creativity and songwriting skills.
So, what I am giving you are the Pulse wave channel and the Triangle wave channel. The triangle wave channel does not offer much in the way of expression (not even volume control), but the pulse wave has four different duty cycles. I have sampled all four. I should also mention that there’s a lot of buzz that comes out of the Nintendo, so I applied a De-noiser to clean things up a bit. I personally don’t think that the integrity of the sounds is affected; this synth is still pretty gritty.
