Interactive spatial sound synthesis – Tension

August 5, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Interactive spatial sound synthesis – Tension

Here is a nice video showing how Kinect from Microsoft really can have a play in music production:

A brief video showing Tension. An interactive spatial sound installation for multiple users. A person enters the space and a generative sound is assigned to that person. The sound pans around in the 6-channel speaker system following the user in the space.

Up to 5 users can use the installation at the same time. Each person modifies the other sounds based on the distance to the other users. The closer you are to other people the more the tension in the sound increases.

Pantheon III Reason ReFill has been released

August 5, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Pantheon III Reason ReFill has been released

Nucleus has released a new version of their magnificent refill Pantheon, this is an evolution of the version II that has been reviewed by us earlier (read the previous review here), here is what they have to say about the new version:

Nucleus SoundLab proudly releases Pantheon III, the next evolution in their series of ultimate Thor ReFills for Propellerhead Reason 5. Pantheon III expands on the concepts and standards set by the first two ReFills with the largest amount of unique Combinators yet. As always, the Pantheon III sound designers continue to reveal their patching secrets with refined and detailed PDF documentation.

Pantheon III is comprised of Combinator and Thor patches created by a dream-team of Reason sound designers.  Tom Pritchard, Adam Fielding, Kirke Godfrey, Joseph Mizelle, Clint Grierson Lewis Osborne and Shaun Wallace – Many of these designers have released a number of their own ReFills, both free and commercial.  Now all have come together, united by the incredible quality standards of Nucleus SoundLab’s Lead Designer Jeremy Janzen, to create the highest-quality Thor ReFill – ever.

Pantheon III is built from the ground up for both Reason 5 and Record.  This means that Kong effects are put to good use, as well as the new Combinator CV inputs.  As well, 36 patches have been specifically built for those who own both Record + Reason 5 – though they will also work great for Reason 6 owners.  These patches use the Line6 amps and Neptune pitch-shifter to take Thor to a completely new level!

Pantheon III is genre-agnostic – its not a pack of sounds specifically designed to create one sub-genre of electronic music.  Instead, the patches inside are applicable to many different styles such as ambient, IDM, trance, electro, dubstep, filmscore and downtempo.  Some sounds fall well outside these genre boundaries as well, and are suitable for exploring totally new sonic territory!  Inside you’ll find an incredible aural landscape of sounds – such as huge modular chords, ‘workstation’-esque pads, filmscore FX, dirty amped leads, and wavetable arpeggios of all stripes.

Details:

  • 260 fresh and unique Combinators
  • 36 Combinators built for Reason 5 + Record (or Reason 6)
  • 300 Thor patches.
  • 8 .rps demo songs.
  • All Combinator and most Thor rotaries/buttons uniquely mapped.
  • All Combinator and Thor patches categorized intelligently.
  • PDF Design documentation for each patch, detailing important aspects of its design, inspiration and performance.

Listen to what Pantheon III offers by downloading the videos and MP3 demos on the product page. In addition, a Demo ReFill (w/ 20 Combinators) is available for free download.

Basic overview of Edirol visual synthesiser

August 4, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Basic overview of Edirol visual synthesiser

Here is how Roland describes this product:

The CG-8 was awarded the Best New Video Product Award 2006 by Club Sytems International, a trade magazine in North America for the Night Club Industry, at the Club System Awards.

Just as synthesis in music prompted new waves of musical creativity so the CG-8 is set to do the same for the visual artist. A sampling synthesizer takes audio in or regenerates it from a wave generator and then modulates it with filters and amplifiers before outputting the sound. In a similar fashion the CG-8 can take in still images, create motion pictures from these and then modulate them with Modifiers and Fade Controller. It’s easiness to grasp, and user-friendliness allows artists to concentrate on making stunning visual displays without getting caught up in complicated operations.Starting with picture files (JPEG’s) as the prime source, overlay files (PNG) used for overlays and built in Computer Graphics, all stored on the internal hard drive, the CG-8 can add any of more than 200 Photo effects and then from more than 60 Overlay effects before finally passing the output to the image modifiers which let you add further motion along X/Y/Z axes and control background colour/hue shifting. This final modulation can be set for rate, depth and waveform just like the LFO in an audio synth.

  • More than 200 Photo effects and more than 60 Overlay effects .
  • 16 trigger pads, a twin D-Beam controller, an assignable X-Y pad, control knobs or an optional foot switch.
  • Adjustable frequency and peak detection provides graphic modulation based on the incoming audio.
  • VGA, S-video or composite video (NTSC or PAL) output.
  • MIDI compatibility with support for V-LINK enabled instruments.

Interesting new and free Mattel Synsonics drum machine

August 4, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Interesting new and free Mattel Synsonics drum machine

Francis Preve has put together a free virtual Mattel Synsonics drum machine for Ableton Live:

In the pantheon of vintage analog drum machines, there’s an unsung classic that isn’t from a big name manufacturer like Roland or Korg, but from a toy company. Released in 1981, the Mattel Synsonics was an affordable black box that housed a fully analog kit consisting of kick, two toms, snare, cymbal and hi-hat – all playable via velocity sensitive pads.

Of course, since it was a “toy”, few artists took it very seriously – with one notable exception: Kraftwerk.

About a month ago, I pulled my Synsonics of its shelf in my studio, fired it up and started sampling.

It’s available as a free download from Preve’s site.
