The Reason Rack offers nearly endless sonic capabilities. But what if you just want the sound of your favorite hardware synth? Or that weird little drum machine you got half-price. In this tutorial we take a look at the External MIDI Instrument and how it can help you expand your Reason rack with your hardware.
Experimental: Bonus Table 571
Bonus Table 571 is a collaborative experiment in joining science, design and music. This project is part of Reclaim NYC’s Collaboration show happening during NYCXDESIGN 2013.
Pure tones tuned to the natural resonant frequency of the wood result in vibrations, determined by the tabletop’s size shape and density. The vibrations reveal a geometric pattern inherent to the wood.
The resonant pattern is etched away by an enzyme cocktail tailored to the molecular structure of the wood. This process is similar to acid-etching a metal plate, such as in printmaking. The difference is that this is based on a live process; using enzymes derived from forest floor microbes.
This piece is auto-collaborative, in that its design elements are defined by interactions between its components and their inherent properties: The dimensions and density of the materials determine it’s resonant frequency which informs the pattern to be etched, and the makeup of the wood itself determines how deeply the enzymes etch into the wood.
Bonus Table 571 is a collaboration between Colleen & Eric Whiteley, Loe Hubbard scientist/bioengineer and Ben Cameron musician/sound designer.

KORG MS-20 MINI Analog Synthesizer 2013
We have seen quite a few demos of the MS20 mini now, but of course we all want more 
Here is a demo of the brandnew KORG MS-20 MINI monophonic analog synthesizer. It is a reissue of the classic MS-20 synth from 1978. The sound of the Mini is damn close!
On some sounds I used a Lexicon MPX-500 for reverbs and a Roland DEP-5 for delay effects. In the intro I used the Doepfer Dark Time sequencer to control the MS-20 mini via MIDI.

A very fat synth !! the 3 rd oscillator really opens up some extra sound possibilities
This is the very source of cheap Moog bass! It is a lot like the strap-on Moog Liberation in its design and architecture and also looks and sounds very much like the Moog Rogue. The MG-1 was built by Moog for Realistic (Radio Shack), and was designed specifically for the home market. Very basic and easy to use, this is a nice cheap way to get your hands on Moog sounds!
The MG-1 is a 2-VCO monophonic/polyphonic analog synth with a genuine 24dB/oct Moog filter, however the overall sound is thin. On the MG-1, the VCOs are referred to as ‘Tone Generators’. It can produce sawtooth, square and pulse waveforms, and the oscillators are detunable and syncable. A simple ASR (attack, sustain, release) envelope called ‘Contour’ can be applied to both the amp and the filter. The LFO section provides triangle or square wave patterns as well as Sample-and-Hold. Additionally there is a simple Ring-Mod effect called ‘Bell’.
Unique to the MG-1 is a slider on the far right side of the keyboard which controls the volume of a simple divide-down polyphonic organ sound. This feature makes it at least a little more versatile than the Rogue. There are RCA inputs and outputs (the input is routed straight to the output for playing along with music from your stereo system) but no external speakers as in most other home marketed synthesizers. There is also no sign of Midi or patch memory on the MG-1.
