The effects of Karftwerk reborn
Mode Machines has introduced the KRP-1 Krautrock Phaser, a phaser effect that uses a unique analog circuit design, based on the famous phaser used in the 1970s “Gerd Schulte Audio Technik Berlin – Compact Phasing A Number 1″.
The Krautrock Phaser is handmade in Franconia, Germany and features all discrete circuitry. The phasing amplitude is created by two lamps and 8 photo-couplers to generate a unique phasing effect.
According to Mode Machines, “You will get an idea of the impressive sound if you listen to Kraftwerk´s Autobahn. (You know – that one part. -ed)
The Krautrock phaser can be used as a guitar pedal or as a studio synthesizer processing tool. There is an input for CV pedals to control the amplitude. There is one mono 1/4″ input and two stereo 1/4″ outputs.
Famous users of the original unit include: Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze and Tommy Bolin.
Controls:
- Modulation
- Feedback
- OSC-Period and Phasing/ Amplitude
The Krautrock Phaser should be available in November for $589 from Big City Music.

Bring the sound of 6 of the world’s top analog consoles into your DAW workstation
Despite the digital revolution in the audio industry, many of today’s top commercial albums are still mixed on analog consoles. Audio engineers rely on analog mixing to provide the nonlinear musical qualities that digital mixing does not produce. “When you mix through an analog desk you get this life and body to the sound that just doesn’t happen when you mix inside the workstation. The separation and imaging from the analog summing is very apparent, especially when your track count gets high” remarks mixer Jay Baumgardner (Papa Roach, Evanescence).
Over the past ten years, multiple audio manufacturers have produced simplified analog summing boxes that allow DAW users to get the benefits of analog mixing without having to use a full fledged analog desk. In 2001, Steven Slate made his mark in the analog summing world by commissioning Roll Music Systems to design and manufacture a custom analog summing box that was later named the FOLCROM. The FOLCROM continues to be one of the most popular analog summing boxes on the market, used by mixer Mike Shipley and other top names. Now in 2009, Slate once again stirs up the analog summing world, this time in the digital domain.
The VIRTUAL CONSOLE COLLECTION consists of two plugins, Virtual Channel and Virtual Mixbuss. Each plugin allows the user to choose from one of six modeled consoles. Virtual Channel is applied on individual mixing channels. Virtual Mixbuss goes on the first insert of the master fader. “When using the Virtual Console Collection, your DAW instantly takes on the personality of a real analog mixing desk. The imaging and depth improves, instruments sit better in the frequency spectrum, and mixing becomes easier and more musical. You can even push the DAW faders up to find each mixer’s “sweet spot”, says Slate.
- Brings the sound of 6 legendary analog consoles to your DAW
- Models all characteristics of both the channels and the analog summing
- Mix and match consoles
- Mac/Windows VST, RTAS, AU
Vince and his Analogues Monologues
Synth-pop legend Vince Clarke has launched a new series of mini-documentaries entitled The Analogue Monologues in which he talks about some of his favorite analog gear. The first episode is up on his site and discusses the wonderful Sequential Circuits Pro One.
Station X and Y and (Z) Tereshkova
Analogue Solutions has unveiled three new (semi) Modular synhtesizers. First is the Station X minimodular Synthesizer fully patchable modular synth, second the Station Y minimodular Expander fully patchable modular synth and last the Tereshkova suitcase modular analogue synthesiser
Station X is a compact “mini-modular” synthesiser. It contains all the essential ingredients to form complete synth patches. Think of it as a mini Red Square or Tereshkova (two other, larger modular synths we produce). In fact, a mini Red Square is a good analogy. If has the same filter and similar key features (though Red Square is 2 VCO). Station X is ideal for beginners who want to dip their toes into the world of modular synths, the travelling producer who wants to take a true analogue modular synth around to different sessions, or home musician who perhaps is limited for space.
Station Y is a compact “mini-modular” synthesiser expander, ideal partner for the Station X. The Station series of minimodulars are ideal for beginners who want to dip their toes into the world of modular synths, the travelling producer who wants to take a true analogue modular synth around to different sessions, or home musician who perhaps is limited for space.
n0t0miz0r, a free MIDI note randomizer plug-in for Windows

SyS Audio Research has released n0t0miz0r, a free MIDI note randomizer plug-in for Windows (VST).
According to the developers, “This is quite handy if you do not have a faulty sequencer or an analog modular synthesizer with a sequencer option at hand. For 80´s-style electronic dance basslines for example, unpredictable randomness is mandatory.”
Features:
- Provides a stable and reliable solution (which really works) to receive Midi data inside a VST compatible host/wrapper.
- Processes (randomizes) the pitch of the notes inside the Midi data stream according to user defined parameters, and then passes the Midi data stream, including the processed note information, on to a Midi-out channel for further usage, in- or outside the VST host.
- All other parameters are unaffected by n0t0miz0r (timing, velocity, note lenght, aftertouch etc. will be passed through untouched).
- Lowest and highest randomized note controls to control what notes are affected.
- Randomization propability (0 – 100%) and exclude duplicates parameter.
Soundcells has released Afterglow v2, an updated version of the atmospheric ReFill for trance producers
Soundcells has released Afterglow v2, an updated version of the atmospheric ReFill for trance producers, jungle heads and ambient artists.
It’s analog, it’s digital, it’s tender and raw, glitchy at times but above this all: Extremely Atmospheric!
All sounds have been meticulously designed to be combined with each other in the exact way the user would like it to be heard. Get great malstroem-, surprising subtractor- and fantastic thor patches, furthermore over 260 samples from analog and digital gear and also physical modeling synths. Version 2 adds 30 mind-blowing combinator patches mainly based on the field recordings which are included in this version. The combinators are programmed in such a way that they behave like real instruments. Soundcells has taken special care of this aspect by assigning the knobs, wheels and buttons for total musical, atmospherical and emotional control. Not only the lead patches offer the possibility to perform with emotion but also the pads and textures will give the user the feel of being a virtuoso soloist!
