And One, the popular synth-pop band from Germany, formed in 1989 after Chris Ruiz and Steve Naghavi met in a Berlin disco. They were both fans of Belgian EBM music, so they decided to play together, using only a drum machine and two keyboards, like their musical idols Depeche Mode had. Working together they compiled a demo tape that producer Jor, who was planning on starting a sub-label off of Modern Music, happened to like. The duo met success rather quickly after that, as they were the first signed band to Machinery Records. In 1990 they released their first single, «Metalhammer».

New album from Colony 5

An album clearly worth checking out, especially since we have not been treated with much new stuff from these two guys in ages, apart from a hardly worth purchasing remix album – unless you are truly hooked

Free listening and download (pay) >>

The first single taken from the album – “Knives” – made it to #10 on the German Alternative Chart [DAC] in a very short time. On “Knives” Colony 5 presents a track that is much harder than we are used to from the band. Sure enough, “Buried Again” presents you with some harder tracks such as “Knives” and “Get Off My Back”.

But old fans should not despair! “Buried Again” is a varied album bringing you everything from EBM-inspired tracks to more danceable futurepop with dynamic and powerful refrains in tracks like “Pills” and “Ghost” and the beautiful downtempo track “Imaginary Girl”– the way we are used to from earlier Colony 5 releases.

One of my old favorite tracks:

EGOkILLER uses a double-dose Phase Distortion Oscillator in place of the standard oscillator/filter set-up. It is a very powerful form of synthesis first seen in Casio’s CZ synths in the ’80’s. The PD Oscillators have a very full sound that gives this synth great character. It is designed for EBM/Industrial music but is versatile enough to be used anywhere.

EGOkILLERversion2 is the first of the Version 2 synths. Like the original it is based on a single Phase Distortion Oscillator. The new version features a dual High Pass – Low Pass filter set-up with resonance, as well as graphical envelopes for both modulation and VCA. The LFO is new and extra flexibility has been added to modulation routings. It also includes really fat Unison and an enhanced overdrive.

And make sure to look out for the new one, scheduled to be released soon :-)

GODkILLERversion2 is a versatile V/A synth, laid out in a similar manner to EGOkILLERv2. It improves on the original with two oscillators with sync and Hard Sync. The mixable Low-pass and Band Reject Filters are carried over from the original. It also has two graphical ADSR envelopes and a comprehensive LFO featuring 16 different waveforms. Overdrive and LFO destinations can be controlled by a Modulation Wheel on a MIDI keyboard controller.

Re-shuffle in Covenant with new member

Covenant were centimeters from quitting. But now the recharged band aims at version 2, with a new line-up (Daniel Myer), studio, sound and album. A new song was preimiered at Das Boot and the album recordings start in February.

But is this new talent enough to keep the group going, here you can find out more about his background in Architect and Haujob

Architect >>

architect is a hybrid of minimalistic drum’n’bass and smooth ambient soundscapes explored by the electronic mastermind daniel meyer.

like an architect who built up his constructions in different layers and channels, also daniel is working with this method by using only sampling tools. he’s constructing abstract sonic buildings which seem to be peculiar transparent – like concrete frames without any surfaces in a pleasant familiarity. the cold polyrhythmic drumcodes are bet into a melted ambience of safety and grace. it’s the warm timbre of this ambient drum’n bass recording which creates its own unique sonic profile.

Laibach, Grendel and more @ ElectriXmas

December 16, 2007 · Posted in Electronic Music · Comments Off on Laibach, Grendel and more @ ElectriXmas

Well half the Laiback concert was OK – that is the second half when they returned to their old songs rather than performing their new stuff. Their new songs are not catchy enough and they take themselves too seriously – so remain with your back catalogue next time you visit Malmoe. Grendel did an OK impression, although their songs to sound the same when you’ve listened to two or three LOL. Finally I must say OneTwo is a joke and can´t understand what they are doing at a gig like this, apart from their legacy with Alpha Ville – crap.

ElectriXmas was an OK event this year, but lacking one or two of the really big names to round the evening off with, better luck next time. below a couple of snapshots from the event:

Agonize – german EBM

December 11, 2007 · Posted in Electronic Music · Comments Off on Agonize – german EBM

agonoize-sieben.jpg

Since Laibach is due for this saturday evening I got inspired to listen to some more EBMish type music and came to think of these guys. Not a favorite act but still some nice heavy tracks.

The German EBM act Agonoize has a new album called Sieben. It’s a double disc album with a total of 19 songs, and there will be 2 versions of it available. As you can guess, the standard version just contains the album’s 2 discs, while the limited “Maximum Permissible Dose” version comes in a box set with a bonus shape-CD containing 3 remixes of their club-friendly track “Femme Fatale” and a few other goodies like a sticker and a photo card.

You can listen to the songs “Femme Fatale” and “I Against Me” on the Agonoize MySpace page. My first impression of the new tracks – it sounds pretty OK
