New free frequency shifter

November 18, 2009 · Posted in Electronic Music · Comments Off on New free frequency shifter

sg-freakshift

Background info:

This is a not-quite-technically-correct stereo frequency shifter (with seperate controls for the left & right channels) based on techniques seen on this web page: http://www.cim.mcgill.ca/~clark/nordmodularbook/nm_spectrum_shift.html

The reason for this not being technically correct is that doing this the right way would require a lot more CPU. This implementation only achieves true frequency shifting in a certain range of frequencies, while frequencies outside of this range get an effect closer to ring modulation, which is still interesting.

There is also a simple distortion effect and LFOs for modulation.

Really cool retro VST organ for free

Missing those orginal organ sounds, well here’s the cure

Free VSTi Organ

Autodafe have released B8 Organ, a VSTi emulation of an Organ. Here’s what they have to say about it…

B8 is basically a reproduction of the old organs of the 60’s-70’s.It has 9 oscillators, switchable between sine and saw wave, with drawbars, vibrato, chorus and reverb.Sine waves results in tones typical of a church organ, or hammond-type sounds. Saw waves sound more like old combo organs, like Farfisas, Davoli, Crumar, for example.

Focusrite launches Scarlett

October 29, 2009 · Posted in Electronic Music · Comments Off on Focusrite launches Scarlett

If it is the ultimate as they claim remains to be seen, but it sure looks promising :-)

Focusrite is pleased to introduce Scarlett, a professional software suite that provides the definitive collection of compression, gating, EQ, and reverb plug-ins for tracking and mixing.

From one of the most prestigious names in pro audio, made famous by the original Red range and the classic ISA console modules, Scarlett provides a beautiful upgrade for any Digital Audio Workstation. Not only does it sound great, the Scarlett user interface features a stunning Red anodized aluminum look featuring intricately modeled, life-like VU meters, setting the standard for drop-dead gorgeous plug-ins.

Each powerful Focusrite plug-in has a host of fast and easy-to-use presets, providing a great starting point for processing everything from vocals and guitars to synth bass and percussion. In addition, every plug-in parameter can be finely tuned to achieve the desired sound. So for preset users and perfectionists alike, Scarlett is destined to become the new ‘go-to’ plug-in.

Scarlett works under VST, AU and RTAS (Pro Tools) hosts, and runs on Macs and PCs, making it the perfect bundle for any music software user.

Features:
– Unmatched Sonic Quality
From the team behind the Forté Suite and the famous Focusrite hardware line. Focusrite has provided that final polish and shine to thousands of hit records over the last two decades.
– Faithful Recreation Of Classic Compressors & Gates
Modeled on original ear-tuned hardware optical compressors, exclusive to Focusrite, Scarlett’s dynamics modules deliver that authentic 1960s Opto sound.
– Multi-modes Enable Creative Gating Techniques
The Gate can operate in stereo mode and, in different dual mono configurations, one signal can be used to trigger the gate of another. Ideal for tightening up a bass line, for example.
– Classic Focusrite EQ Curves & Controls
Scarlett uses the same Focusrite six-band EQ approach as the Red 2 and ISA EQs, with filters, parametric mids and shelving, all modeled to offer an authentic response across the entire audible frequency spectrum.
– Professional Reverb With Concise Controls
Based on classic algorithmic studio reverb designs, this reverb delivers a remarkable level of sonic quality for your recording projects. Easy to use controls get you to the ideal reverb sound in seconds.

New free VSTs from Synthgeak and free Reason Refills

September 30, 2009 · Posted in Electronic Music · Comments Off on New free VSTs from Synthgeak and free Reason Refills

Synthgeek has released the SG-WSS1, SG-APCX and SG-APC1, three free virtual synthesizer plug-ins for Windows.

synthgeek_sg-wss1_thumb

SG-WSS1, SG-APCX and SG-APC1 details

  • SG-WSS1 — The “WSS” stands for Wave Shaping Synth. This is a subtractive synth based on an idea inspired by my K2000. By no means an emulation, it merely makes use of waveshaping techniques similar to a couple of the K2000’s DSP algorithms. Think VA with a twist, and some nice modulation options.
  • SG-APCX — This is an expanded version of the APC1 synth found below, including more filter options, distortion, and modulation via 3 LFO’s & 3 step sequencers. Think of it as a groovebox for crazy synth fx. It can also be coerced into lo-fi squelchy bassline territory, though due to it’s nature, tuning can be tricky.
  • SG-APC1 — A rather simple noise machine inspired by the Kaustic Machines Atari Punk Console. Best when tweaked or automated, as otherwise it just puts out a steady tone. Includes a basic on-off MIDI gate and a highpass filter for added usefulness.
