Martin Kaltenbrunner – Tangible Music
Martin Kaltenbrunner is Professor at the Interface Culture Lab at the University of Art and Design in Linz. Before his return to Austria he worked as researcher and lecturer at the Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona, at the MIT Medialab Europe in Dublin, as well as further European universities. As co-founder of Reactable Systems he had been mainly responsible for the interaction design concepts behind the Reactable, which has been successfully introduced by renowned artists such as Björk. The instrument has been shown at several international media art and music festivals, and was awarded with the Golden Nica for Digital Music, two D&AD Yellow Pencils and the Prize of the City of Barcelona. Kaltenbrunner publishes in the context of human computer interaction conferences and his influential research on tangible interface tools has been employed for the realization of numerous artistic and scientific projects in that area.

In September, Dubspot had the wonderful pleasure of hosting a live streaming workshop with Create Digital Music’s Peter Kirn and Martin Kaltenbrunner of Reactor. Developed in Spain by Austrian and Spanish music and media technologists, Reactable is a musical instrument that is changing the way modern electronic music is produced and performed. In this video recap of the live webcast, Peter Kirn asked the necessary question “what makes this an instrument?” and Martin Kaltenbrunner answered that question with a demonstration using Reactable’s tangible and intuitive interface to create and manipulate sounds on the fly. Furthermore, Peter and Martin talked about interface design, music technology, production and performance of electronic music without a computer, and much more.

Nice demonstration of a Multi-Touch Piano Keyboard
This video demonstrates a set of capacitive touch sensing piano key tops which mount on top of any existing piano or MIDI keyboard. The key tops sense up to three touches each by position and contact area, letting the performer continuously and polyphonically shape every note in multiple dimensions. The system connects to a computer by USB and uses OSC for flexible communication with a wide variety of synthesis software.

Super synth group: Vince Clarke & Martin Gore Announce VCMG
Vince Clarke (Erasure, Yazoo, Depeche Mode) and Martin L. Gore (Depeche Mode) have announced that they are releasing an album as VCMG. It’s the duo’s first collaboration in 30 years.
According to Clarke and Gore, VCMG is an opportunity for the duo to “exercise their lifelong love of the genre as the techno-inspired VCMG.”
“I’ve been getting into and listening to a lot of minimal dance music,” says Clarke. “I got really intrigued by all the sounds.”
“I realized I needed a collaborator,” he adds, “so it occurred to me to talk to Martin.”
“Out of the blue, I got an e-mail from Vince just saying, ‘I’m interested in making a techno album. Are you interested in collaborating?’” says Gore. “This was maybe a year ago. He said, ‘No pressure, no deadlines,’ so I said, ‘OK’.”

VCMG – Spock
Clarke and Gore plan to release several EP’s, as VCMG, followed by an album.
The first release is an EP entitled Spock. EP1 / SPOCK will feature remixes from Edit-Select, aka Tony Scott, the UK DJ / producer; Regis, British techno musician Karl O’Connor; Zak aka DVS1, founder of Hush Records plus XOQ, the alter ego of Überzone / Q, who mixed the VCMG album.
EP1/SPOCK will be available starting Nov 30th on Beatport, and in wider distribution on Dec 12. 12″ vinyl hits Dec 19th.
