It has been a while since I uploaded my last video for obvious and sometimes not so obvious reasons. But last night this dreamy piece came up and I want to share it with you.
The music is dedicated to my beloved girlfriend Anne. On 9/11 we celebrated our second anniversary together. She means everything to me and I hope we can live together for a very long time.
The piece starts with two 8 step sequences from rows 1 and 2 of the Synthesizers.com Q960 sequencer. The 2 rows are manually alternated using the Q962 sequential switch. Row 3 of the Q960 sequencer modulates the Ian Fritz 5Pulser. After that the Nord Wave comes in and then an 8 step sequence from row 2 on the Doepfer MAQ16/3 driving the self build Modular. The Pipe Organ preset from the Korg PE-1000 is used to play the chords. The solo is performed on the Nord Lead 1. Anne used my iPhone 4 to film this video.

While And One will probably soon announce its departure from SPV to launch the next material on the band’s own label, it also found the time to announce a brand new video: “Aigua”, which is Catalan for ‘water’. The video was directed by Adolf Steinhimmel.
The track does not feature And One’s Steve Naghavi but just guest singer Vivi on vocals. Nice song, nice video.

So following on from this post, I was digging around on Muffs and saw that the meme had evolved again. Slipperysoles had posted another self-generating Buchla patch, this time based on an idea from Douglas Leedy in 1970. Leedy made an album called Entropical Paradise which explored automata in music, which is documented in the indispensable book Electronic Music by Allen Strange. See the scan I made of the flow chart of Leedy’s original patch. I decided to try and recreate the this on my 200e system, which is itself a evolution of the Buchla 100 Leedy used. There are lots of differences in the modules and functions I had to contend with but I got somewhere close, and as always with the Buchla found something unique along the way
Time machine: Exploring the classic Roland SH-101
A voyage into the heart of the Roland SH-101 from the year 1983. Exploration by Marko Ettlich monophonic analog synthesis 1 VCO I Saw, Square, PWM, Noise Filter – 24dB lowpass step sequencer, arpeggiator It has been used by The Prodigy, 808 State, Apollo 440, Devo, Aphex Twin, Astral Projection, Nitzer Ebb, Chemical Brothers, Boards of Canada and many more.
The SH-101 is very cool, especially for techno, drum&bass and ACID! It’s a monophonic bass synthesizer. Its sound lies somewhere between the TB-303 and a Juno bass sound. It has a lot of simple but cool features. You can control the VCF, pitch, LFO or all from the pitch bender. It has a white noise generator, arpeggiator with up, down and up/down patterns and a simple real-time sequencer. The LFO offers random, sine, square or noise waveforms. And normal or auto portamento effects give you that elastic bass sound. There are external clock inputs for the sequencer and arpeggiator, CV/GATE inputs and outputs and a CV hold pedal.
Unfortunately there is no patch memory storage and although it has no MIDI there are upgrades available for it from many analog service companies that will allow you to incorporate it into any MIDI studio environment. It can also be controlled by MIDI using a CV/MIDI converter. It’s great for bass sounds or bubbly analog effects. They come in three different flavors – gray, blue or red (there was a VERY rare white version too)! It can also be strapped on like a guitar for live performance using the optional Hand Grip.
Trogotronic Noise (Trogotronic model 676 & Teenage Engineering OP-1)
All sounds (including drums, percussions etc.) made with Trogotronic Model 676 Fury M Series and sampled, edited & arranged with Teenage Engineering OP-1. Voice with Qneo Voice Synth on iPhone (thru Trogotronic 676) Mixdown & some edits in Logic Pro.
Like any Trogotronic worth its salt the 676 Fury’s functions are not conservative… Meaning, while there are two Main Oscillators, other parts of the circuit can command more complicated frequencies in an intuitive manner. Similarly the Main Oscillators themselves may be applied as filters serving to broaden the utility of the instrument even more so. With regard to BOTH mayhem AND stability 676 Fury’s switch settings offer different parameter reactions: Toggles “down” Oscillators & Track navigate pitch black F-5 electron turbulence; Switched “up” same controls “play nice” in crimson livery with accordance to classical form.The sound? Curiously akin to R. Lee Ermey switching on the kilowatt floods & screaming through an Orange Full-stack set to “11” first thing the morning after an all-night gin bender; i.e. relentless punishment applied to all head-holes within audio range. Add to this the inclusion of 5 CV inputs compatible with sequencers, envelopes etc. and this little box may well become a classic in its own right; “May the Gods save us from this menace; girls and mothers—dress our Fury now in blood-red robes!”

Okay – I did this track just 4 fun, messing around with this sick module, thinking the guys from Togotronic still don’t know what it’s doing – I don’t know that too 😀

Rebel Technologies Stoixeia demo
Zoë Blade was lucky enough to be treated to a demo of Rebel Technologies’ Stoixeia at the Brighton Mini Maker Faire 2012.
Στοιχεῖα is a dual Euclidean Sequencer. It algorithmically generates rhythmic sequences from an input trigger signal. The name (Στοιχεῖα, Stoicheia, or Elements) comes from the title of Euclid’s book Elements in which the algorithm was first described.

Kim Pedersen & Nick Rothwell made this interactive sound installation using Percussa AudioCubes. For this project, using the AudioCubes was more efficient than developing the installation from scratch using low level tools. The AudioCubes can sense distances and detect each other’s position and location in a network. And you can build a network of cubes, consisting of 16 AudioCubes per USB connection.

A live looping improv jam with a Fender Rhodes, Moog Prodigy, and an Akai MPD26 controlling a custom kit in NI’s Kontakt. An iPod Touch is controlling the reverb mix on the Rhodes through Lemur, and the first loop from the Rhodes is recorded in Ableton’s looper controlled by a MIDI Fighter 3D. A Novation Launchpad is controlling the recording and playback of loops in Ableton Live. An MXR Wylde Overdrive is connected to the Rhodes. All audio is passed through a PreSonus 1818VSL connected to a Macbook Pro running Ableton Live.
All loops are recorded live.
