Synare and WerkBench wake up the neighbors!
WerkBench is available for the iPad in the app store: http://bit.ly/L6jhd9
Here we are using WerkBench to make a groove using sounds from a late-1970’s analog drum synth known as the Synare 3.
The Star Instruments Synare is most famous for its use on disco records as a simple ‘tom-tom’ sound (the first sound I play in this video). Despite its cheesy historical use, the Synare actually a beastly little analog synth with two oscillators (with noise and LFO modes respectively), a self oscilating low-pass filter, and envelopes for filter and volume. I only scratch the surface in this video.
WerkBench is a tool for crafting rhythmic loops from any source material in real-time. WerkBench is great for grabbing sounds on the fly from analog synths that lack patch memory (like the Synare, Monotron, or any modular rig).

Saturday freeware: Datmatriks modular synth
Meesha has released a free modular synth for Windows, Datmatriks:
Damatriks is a “classic” modular synthesizer system VST plugin, inspired by the modular analog synths. With many different modules in place, endless creativity is guaranteed. These modules can be patched using a CV (control voltage) matrix module, creating complex CV patches.
Modules:
- MIDI/cv
- vco type 1 (2)
- vco type 2
- vco link (sync/Xmod)
- mixer (with noise gen)
- envelope type 1 (2)
- vca type 1
- filter type 1
- filter type 2
- delay
- phaser
- clock (with multiplier)
- stepsequencer
- lfo type 1
- lfo type 2
- s/h
- cv mixer
- cv matrix 9->14
- output
It’s a free download at the Meesha site.

Live looping with Ableton Live, a DSI MoPho, an Akai MPD26 and APC20, a DJ TechTools MIDI Fighter 3D, and three iPads running PPG Wavegenerator, Lemur, and Animoog. An iConnectMIDI is sending and receiving MIDI notes from Animoog to MIDI clipslots in Ableton Live. Bass from the PPG app is being looped with Ableton’s looper plug-in, controlled by Lemur. All loops are recorded live, nothing was pre-recorded.
Magellan, Animoog, Addictive Synth, Alchemy – iPad synths
Additional exploration of some of the most popular iPad soft synths out there right now:
I have not yet accommodated after 3 months (I barely used it the iPad for music, most of the time only for business – during this time), with this style of making music on iPad
So, excuse some nonsense hand movement!
Also, when I’m trying to play several synths (more than 3 at same time), pops and glitches appear (I have iPad 2 16 Gb) because of the processor, but I think that the iPad will become in future a powerful tool for musicians.
I am already thinking to use it in my next concert or albums!
Synths that I used in video: Magellan, Animoog, Addictive Synth, Alchemy.

Vocoder stuff: Sennheiser VSM 201 and EML POLYBOX in action
A brief, stereotypical vocoder demo featuring the amazing Sennheiser VSM 201 Vocoder with an EML POLYBOX. These were both units that were in for repair at The Analog Lab in NYC. The tone generator is routed through the EML where it is divided into user selected pitches/chords. The chords remain static, but the pitch shifts with the change of the frequency of the tone generator.
Sennheiser Vocoder VSM201
made in 1978
this is a luxury 20bands vocoder
fully analogue
of course only the “creme de la creme” used THIS, because it is really not cheap.. Kraftwerk!
The vocoder was first a military device to encode speech signals

New programs for the Roland JV-880
The JV-880 is the rack-mount version of the JV-80 keyboard and features powerful multi-timbral capabilities combined with impressive sound editing capability, all in a 1U rack space. The immediate forerunner to the immensely popular JV-1080/2080, the 880 provides the same high quality sounds for which the entire JV line has come to be respected. And like its descendants, the JV-880’s sampled waveform memory can be expanded (to 14 Mbytes) using Roland’s series of SR-JV80 expansion boards and SO-PCM1 cards.
Editing sounds is done via the rotary encoder that lets you select parameters and set values at the touch of a button. When editing you can audition sounds right from the front panel by pressing the preview button. There are TVF (filter), TVA (amp), micro-tuning, and multiple LFOs. An onboard effects processor with various types of chorus, reverb, and delays rounds out the package. It is used by K.O.
Hi!
Here are some of my new programs for the Roland JV-880!. Every patch was initialized, then saw waves/square waves are chosen then the programming is started from all zero-set parameters. The JV-880 (1992) is very similar to the Roland D-50 (1987) with 4 partials that can be turned on or off, individually programmed. Each of the partial’s parameters can be filtered in several ways. There isn’t a limit to what is sent through the TVF as there is with the D-50. JV-880 is tricky to program with just one knob and 7 buttons, but its so rewarding! Although the JV is digital, the JV can be very lush if programmed with some diligence and patience as all synths require.
DIY: Tymkrs Protosynth
Background details for this video; the Protosynth is designed to streamline experimenting with keyboard-controlled electronic music projects and the prototyping of new DIY synth projects. The video shows a lot of background on the creating of the Protosynth and follows that with a brief demo of how it can be used.
