MOOG SOUND LAB | Sylvan Esso
Amelia and Nick of Sylvan Esso came into the Moog Sound Lab armed with only a Laptop and a voice. They surrounded themselves with an array of Moog synthesizers and Moogerfoogers to rework their debut single “Hey Mami”.
How’d they get that sound?
· Amelia is singing through an MF-104M Analog Delay and live looping her voice to create all of the harmonies.
· Kick drum was created using the filter resonance and overload on a Slim Phatty
· High Hat is a Voyager Rack Mount and Nick is tweaking the Filter Cutoff to change the pitch of the high hat
· Snare Drum is created with a Voyager Rack Mount- a combination of noise with the input being driven and processed through a 500 Series Analog Delay
· Nick is using Ableton Live to record and trigger all of the live samples. The entire MIDI sequencing of all the Moog gear is coming from Ableton, but all of the automation is being done manually by Sanborn
· The harmonic bell-like sounds are from a Sub Phatty
· Bass lines are a Minitaur bass synthesizer. An MF-104M Analog Delay is turned on and off as he adjusts the pitch on the fly throughout the song.

RAW WORKS – new signature iMASCHINE Expansion pack
Native Instruments has recently released RAW WORKS, a signature iMASCHINE Expansion created by in-demand producer Nottz.
RAW WORKS is the third in a growing series of signature Artist Expansions exclusive to iMASCHINE – a complete, portable groove sketchpad for iPad and iPhone. Other Expansions in the series include sound packs from acclaimed DJ/producers Kerri Chandler and DJ Godfather.
RAW WORKS delivers five projects and five kits of Nottz’s signature sound exclusively to iMASCHINE. Renowned for his work with Busta Rhymes, Snoop Dogg, Kanye West, and J Dilla, Nottz is known for his authentic, old school production style. For this Expansion, Nottz sampled live sessions with his own musicians, then handpicked sounds from the recordings to create a set of gritty drum sounds and melodic phrases. The Expansion’s deep, raw basslines were processed with Nottz’s sampling expertise, delivering a key component of the producer’s signature sound.
KAOZ THEORY brings the unmistakable sound of Kerri Chandler to iMASCHINE – the deep, grooving house style that has made him one of the most respected artists on the underground scene for over 20 years. The Expansion contains a total of six kits, two instruments and two full projects. The three Drum Kits are made up of dirty, analog kicks, snares, hats, and claps. A Melodic Kit provides the trademark Chandler synth chords while two Special Kits deliver basses, vocal samples, synth stabs and keys. iMASCHINE users can also access two instruments and two full iMASCHINE projects created by Chandler himself – fully-conceived musical material available only in this iMASCHINE Expansion.
DIRTY KNOCK was created by DJ Godfather – the Detroit DJ, producer, label owner, and founding father of ghetto tech/Detroit bass. The genre combines elements of techno, house, Miami bass and turntablism, and has in turn influenced juke and trap music. Four projects and five kits deliver an array of rough basslines, analog sound effects, dirty drums, high synth stabs, rumbling 808s, and tight snares true to DJ Godfather’s signature sound. The additional melodic kit comprises one shot beeps and sweeps for giving tracks an added nuanced flair.
All samples provided come in uncompressed .WAV format (16-bit 44.1kHz) and have been processed and tweaked for immediate use. Tracks created with iMASCHINE Artist Expansions can also be exported to MASCHINE and MASCHINE MIKRO for additional editing and finalization.
The full range of iMASCHINE Artist Expansions can be purchased in the iMASCHINE In-App store for $0.99 USD / 0.89 EUR each. iMASCHINE costs $4.99 USD / 4.49 EUR.

BX-13-MICRO Vintage Roland Analog Guitar Synth to Modern GR-55 Bus Converter with VCA
The BX-13-MICRO is a most advanced, yet easiest to use, vintage 24-pin to 13-pin Roland guitar synthesizer bus converter.
The BX-13-MICRO tackles the problem of controlling the level of the normal guitar by including a voltage-controlled amplifier inside the BX-13, doing the same job as the voltage controlled amplifiers found inside a GR-500, GR-300 or GR-700.
And here is an added plus: no loss of tone as you turn the guitar volume down! The advanced VCA design does not roll off tone like a passive volume control. You get the full range of tone at any volume.
With an entirely redesigned circuit, the transparently converts the 24-pin format to the 13-pin format, and there are no levels to adjust, no additional cables, just clean, analog signal processing with no latency.
Creating the classic Jean Michel Jarre Laser Harp sound
This is the classic Laser Harp sound Jean Michel Jarre use. It is actually a preset in the Elka Synthex, number 46. Jarre used other presets on the Synthex right out of the box. To create a laser harp sound, synchronize OSC2 to OSC1 and here comes the secret why many fail to create the sound. The sound uses Glide with Speed and Amount to modulate pitch of the synchronized oscillator. Many people think that an envelope is modulating pitch but it is Glide.
The sound also use pulse wave on OSC1 and OSC2 use OSC1 to PWM and ring modulator.
The Synthex is a very lush sounding classic analog 8 voice synthesizer. Later versions implemented basic MIDI functions. It has 30 knobs, 6 sliders, 80 switches and a joystick. Powerful sounds with 2 oscillators per note, separate envelope generators, chorus and even a sequencer! The use of stable DCO’s (digitally controlled analog oscillators) and oscillator cross modulation of Pulse Width and a multimode filter made it unique in its time.
There is a cool joystick that replaces traditional pitch/mod wheels and allows for greater variable real-time control over the two LFOs, oscillator and filter modulation. The 6 sliders beside the joystick assign what (LFO, osc and filter) goes to the joystick. Voices can also be layered or split across the keyboard. Other great features include the onboard digital Ring-Modulator, Chorus effect and Dual or Layer modes available. And also a four-track sequencer rounds out this synths host of features. Two of it’s tracks can output MIDI data. This is just an extremely good analog and unique synth excellent for pads, drones and glistening lead sounds. They’re a bit of a pain to service and find parts for.
