YAMAHA DX7 II FD perfroming “Chimes”

October 13, 2013 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on YAMAHA DX7 II FD perfroming “Chimes”

Vintage synthesizer demo track featuring the classic Yamaha DX7

all synthesizer sounds: YAMAHA DX7 II FD FM-Synthesizer (1987)
recording: multi-tracking without midi
fx: reverb and delay

The demo shows typical and not so typical FM sounds. a bit PPG and Fairlight like.

“I like this synth a lot! Yamaha should built a DX7 III with realtime controller like the old PSS FM keyboards, with internal arpeggiator, step sequencer and a fx unit with reverb and delay and chorus. this would be fantastic.

KORG ms-20 mini jam session

October 12, 2013 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on KORG ms-20 mini jam session

‘ollilaboratories’ gives us a tour of his new MS-20 Mini, video description below:

Got my KORG ms-20 this week. Hooked it up for the first time today through a ibanez analogue Echo Shifter delay.

The ms20 was synced with a KORG monotribe through a jomox t-resonator with added rev+ddl FX.. the ms20 is clean except for the analogue delays.

No multitracking… one take no edits and overdubs straight into DAW just some limiter to keep the peaks down. And yep, its noisy and hissy, but thats the way i like it.

And yeah, i suffer from “cutoff frequency knob ticks”… 30 years w analogue synths does that to you :)

Paul provides a snap shot of some modular gear, description below:

First mess about with the modular since receiving MATHS & OPTOMIX today. Just a bit of fun, some seriously crazy modulations , squeals and screams.

Also used are the DPO, Moddemix, Pressure Points, Brains, MMG, A145 LFO, A160/161 Clock Sequencer/Divider.

The audio is going through a Quadraverb for delay, then recorded into Logic. The video was filmed on my iPad. The audio & the video were then merged using iMovie.

Tres – new monosynth Rack Extension for Reason

October 12, 2013 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Tres – new monosynth Rack Extension for Reason

fxpansion_tres_thumb

FXpansion has announced the release of Tres, a monosynth Rack Extension for Reason powered by DCAM analogue circuit-modelling technology.

Tres features our powerful TransMod modulation system and a wide variety of timbral flexibility and tone sculpting – a deep two-oscillator synth capable of deep basses, biting leads, strange drones, warped percussion and twisted SFX.

Tres’ modelled VCOs can interact at audio rate to produce complex tones; a filtered noise generator and sub-oscillator round out the oscillator section. A keytracking, time-variant shelf-EQ allows you to emphasize or cut higher harmonics before a switchable multimode filter with huge resonance, self-oscillation, FM, adjustable drive and 3 distinct classic synth filter models. Tres’ final output VCA provides a non-linear analogue drive stage for a variety of tonal colours from warm and smooth to gritty and aggressive.

Most of Tres’ parameters can be modulated simultaneously by any of 10 available modulation sources including Tres’ built-in dual envelopes and LFOs and external CV sources from elsewhere in your Reason project. You can also route external sources for audio-rate filter FM and use Tres’ built-in envelopes and LFOs to modulate other devices within your session.

Tres comes with a comprehensive library of over 200 unprocessed and Combinator patches, developed in conjunction with Nucleus Sound Lab.

Tres is available to purchase for $49 USD / 39 EUR inc. VAT where applicable.

Nintendo audio played by player piano and robotic percussion

October 11, 2013 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Nintendo audio played by player piano and robotic percussion

This system allows for Nintendo gameplay audio to be played through an acoustic player piano and robotically controlled percussive instruments. The piano and percussion play live during actual gameplay, mirroring the sounds that would normally be created electronically. All audio, including music and sound effects, is translated in realtime so that it is produced by the instrument most closely resembling the characteristics of the original electronic sound.

Playlist:

0:00 – Mario
0:53 – Mario 2
2:59 – Mario 3
4:06 – Zelda
6:02 – Mario 2 (End Theme)

For those interested in the technical details, both the piano and the percussion use solenoids to drive their player mechanisms. The piano uses Yamaha’s Disklavier system to strike keys, and the percussion uses a custom solution to strike the drum sticks. Both the piano and percussion are each controlled by Raspberry Pis which have custom software to control each instrument. The software is responsible for translating the gameplay audio to instructions which ultimately define which solenoid should be actuated. In full disclosure, there is normally a half-second audio delay that was removed in editing, but it’s still very playable live. The piano is controlled through the Disklavier’s MIDI interface, while the percussion’s solenoids are directly controlled through the Pi’s GPIO interface.

The Chiller – free synthesizer ensemble for Native Instruments Reaktor

October 11, 2013 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on The Chiller – free synthesizer ensemble for Native Instruments Reaktor

boscomac_the_chiller_thumb

Boscomac has introduced The Chiller, a free synthesizer ensemble for Native Instruments Reaktor.

THE CHILLER is an omni-synthesizer which includes a bass section, synth section and a string section. Inspired by the ARP Omni, it is very easy to use and offers a synthetic orchestra on hand.

The instrument delivers a sound cold, reminiscent of the eighties and the new wave. The bass section is monophonic (active from C0 to C4) and other sections cover the entire keyboard. All sections can be played together.

In the autumn, let’s play with the chiller.

The Chiller is a free download. Donations are appreciated.

REAKTOR’s Vectory vs. MIDI + Random Reaktor Stuff

October 11, 2013 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on REAKTOR’s Vectory vs. MIDI + Random Reaktor Stuff

REAKTOR’s Vectory can make your beat slicing dreams come true—provided you can control the chaos. Here’s how.

Another small Reaktor jam using some unfinished instruments.

The “Drone-Osc” uses a weird combination of phase modulation (like in the DX-7 and other FM synths) and phase distortion (Like the Casio CZ-1000). It can easily go from warm tones to harsh noise!
