Background : the 1996 was a very exciting year. Techno music passed beyond the “old school” era and producers diffusely started creating complex sounds, emotional athmospheres and rich structures. In that period the modern meaning of computer music was at its early stage and everyone tried to do his best with the few instruments at his disposal. The result took the form of hundreds of innovative labels (Primate, Soma, Nova Mute, Evolution, Plus8, just to mention few) that laid the fundations of modern techno music.
The source : The original loops and sequences had been created with several hardware synthesizers, drum machines and by sampling vinyls and radio signals. All the loops were initially sampled, edited and processed with a glorious Creamware TripleBOARD, the first “Hard Disk Recording” system for PC, and then recorded on a Tascam DA-20 (basically used as storage medium because of the small hard disc capacity).
Commodore 64 Synthesizer Sessions (Free Sample Pack)
BPB’s Tomislav Zlatic has released a free sample library, Commodore 64 Synthesizer Sessions, that features classic C64 sounds:
I’ve released the first part of what will be the “Commodore 64 Synthesizer Sessions” free sample pack series. The sounds were created in the MSSIAH Mono Synthesizer running on my Commodore 64 with the SID 8580 chip installed. All samples are recorded and kept 100% dry for maximum authenticity.
The goal is to capture famous SID sounds, as well as some classic synth sounds you wouldn’t expect to hear coming from a Commodore 64. The first pack includes two classic lead sounds and one called Rainy Metropolis, inspired by Yamaha CS-80 sounds used by Vangelis in the Blade Runner opening sequence.

Free Roland MC-202 Kick Drum Sample Pack By Robotik Audio
Robotik Audio has released a set of free kick drum samples recorded from the Roland MC-202 MicroComposer analog synthesizer.
The Roland MC-202 is capable – just like any other (monophonic) synth – of creating some very powerful kicks. Zeroing the oscillators using only a low freguency sine, resonance, envelope, ultra short attack, different decays and very little sustain and release. I’ve created my own little sample kit from it. The kit contains 26 dry WAV samples of the MC-202 with no normalizing or any eq’ing. Personally I really like the sound it produces so here you go.
The samples are available for free download via Robotik Audio.
This is an analog synthesizer/sequencer. It sounds very much like the TB-303 and SH-101 bass synths. Sometimes considered the “poor man’s 303”. It has a very evolved form of TB-303 like programming (more like the MC-4) and SH-101 like controls of the VCO, VCF, VCA, LFO, Envelope and Mixer sections. The LCD display is a great feature too.
The MC-202 was sort of a next-generation TB-303. So the idea was to program sequence/patterns into it internally which would give you those 303 basslines that we’ve come to love. But programming the MC-202 is a bit too intense and over done for the simple monophonic bass line. However you can control it externally by hooking up a MID-CV/Gate converter. Then you basically have yourself an SH-101!
The sequencer is actually a 2-channel CV/gate sequencer, with both channels being capable of driving a separate external synth. It’s a very useful unit, also, for its DINsync capabilities; it can receive on one port, and send over two, and also can ‘split’ DINsync to branch a sync signal out to multiple devices.
This machine is best for those who want to get 303-like patterns (it has accent just like the 303) and basslines with an SH-101 sound. If you can handle programming the notes into its sequencer you can have a lot of fun.
Cinesamples – Piano in Blue Walkthrough
Walkthrough of this piano library from Cinesamples.
Background information:
With a mind to the handful of historic pictures from the recording Kind of Blue our engineer Tim Starnes (Drums of War, HollywoodWinds, Cinesnares, Cinetoms 2, CineCrash) set up three sets of microphones. The first pair – the U49’s from old Columbia set up in historical position (note that the original was in mono), the two other pairs each set back a touch further from the other.
We recorded two signal chains for each mic, a clean signal going through the Neve board and one going through a historic tape machine and finally into pro tools. We highly suggest exploring the charming colorization of the tape signal but both are provided for your convenience. For some of the youngsters out there note that tape will alter the sound of medium to high gain velocity layers and that often engineers go through great lengths to achieve this distortion.
Due to the delightful variances in timbre with each key the piano was sampled chromatically; this was the only way to get a true representation of the instrument. Barry was the pianist for the sampling and he employed a unique strategy.
“Perhaps this library benefits from having someone so intimate with sampling striking the keys. The way this particular piano was voiced was very unusual and charming. Certain notes when struck with matching velocities would sound rather different in tone from one another. One would scarcely notice this in a session but it would be greatly amplified via sampling. We decided the most faithful way to capture the samples was to do it by ear, rather then by touch. Instead of concentrating on a perfect velocity match across the keyboard we listened for sweet-spots/landmarks, identifiable, pleasing string to hammer ratios. This is a method employed by pianists to layer notes upon one another with clarity. I think the end result is better for recording in this manner rather then a straight key-weight dependent system.”
We sincerely hope you enjoy this piano as much as we do.

Typewriter – new sampled instrument for Kontakt
Rhythmic Robot has released Typewriter, a sampled instrument for Kontakt.
Typewriter is a sampled version of a 1920s Imperial wide-carriage typewriter. It includes a pool of randomly-selected keystrikes, plus a host of carriage-return, bell, platen wind, spool wind, shift, tab and other mechanical noises. Keystrikes can be “played” with one hand from a MIDI keyboard’s white notes while shift, tab, carriage return and so on can be added at will via the black notes.
Typewriter is ideal for special effects, stutter-type glitches, foley effects or sound design. It is being released in time for Valentine’s Day so users can “write love letters straight from their heart… in style”.
Features:
- 21 randomly-selected keystrike samples: no machine-gunning.
- Mechanical noises, platen winds, tabs, shift up and shift down, space bar etc.
- Mapped so as to be “playable” from a MIDI keyboard: type from your synth.
Price: £1.50. Requires Kontakt version 4.2.3 or later (including Kontakt 5).

Best Service releases Nitron – Sample-based Synth for Kontakt & Kontakt Player
Best Service has released Nitron, a new sample-based synthesizer powered by Kontakt Player.
The more than 1000 included Nitron patches are high quality multi-samples from more than 50 different synthesizers. You will find a broad range of classics as well as lesser known synthesizers from the last 30 years in this collection. The library is focused on providing the fattest possible lead and bass sounds. This product is well suited for techno, drum ‘n’ bass, dubstep, hip hop, bigbeat, trance and electro, as well as pop and ambient music.
Nitron is based on Native Instruments’ Kontakt 5.
Best Service says “Nitron cannot be compared to other sample-based libraries, which give you very limited or no access at all to editing and tweaking your sounds. Nitron is like a real synthesizer, using high end source samples as oscillators”. If you own the full Kontakt 4 version (or newer), you can use the countless possibilities of this sophisticated sampler to tweak your sounds, giving you access to an almost infinite number of sound creations for any music style imaginable. Tweaking of course is also possible with the included Kontakt Player.
Top features included are low pass filters, high pass, band pass, vowel and phaser filters. The user can choose between poly and mono mode as well as an authentic legato mode. A unison mode plus a global saturator make your sounds as fat and rich as possible. Via the mod wheel you can access useful parameter assignments for all patches like additional high pass filters, tremolo or vibrato giving this must have package a finishing touch.
Most patches use effects like Chorus, Flanger, Delay and Convolution Reverb. In the Kontakt Player version you need to turn on the FX button to use this effects. In the full Kontakt version, the effects can be edited or replaced with other effects you like.
This synthesizer/library has been produced by the Swiss producer & sound designer Urban Riedo – Tunebeast.
Pricing & Availability
Nitron costs €189 but is currently available for the introductory offer price of €149.
As it is powered by Kontakt Player it is available for 32- and 64-bit Windows and Mac OS X in VST, AU and RTAS instrument formats.
