Xhip Effects R2, an updated version of the free effects bundle for Windows, is now available.
These effect plugins were originally created for use with Xhip, the “xxx-xated xound xource”. The effects were implemented as external plugins, though, for greater versatility.
New in R2:
- mDelay parameters are smoothed.
- Limiter has activity/clipping LEDs added.
- Small graphical changes, bg color adjusted, shaded slider.
- Several small bugs fixed.

Synapse Audio Software has announced the release of Orion 8, the latest version of its music production software for Windows.
After two years of development, Orion gets its most important update with Orion 8, taking its sound quality, workflow and possibilities to an entirely new level.
Changes in Orion 8
- New Instruments
- Pro-9 virtual-analog drum sound modelling generator(complete overhaul of the former XR-909 generator).
- Acoustic Grand, a high-quality, sampled-based grand piano module.

- High-quality lookahead limiter and a new compressor, both meeting professional standards.

- New navigation bar in the arrangement window gives an overview of the entire project, and allows instant zooming or navigating to any bar with a single click.
- Patterns can be resized and stretched with the mouse directly in the playlist.
- Full mousewheel support has been added to all views, including the piano roll, mixer, instruments and effects.
- DrumRack
- Each sample or sample group can now be mapped to any MIDI key, and all new V8 drumkits are mapped according to the General MIDI (GM) drum map standard.
- MIDI Grooves can be imported via Drag+Drop and will function instantly due to the GM compatibility.
- The new 12-bit switch added allows for vintage, gritty MPC-type sounds.
- New Sample Content
- Provided by well-known sampling experts Yellow Tools.
- Whether you’re looking for a high-quality acoustic drum set, percussion samples or an electric bass or acoustic guitar- the new content added to Orion consists exclusively of finest 24-bit quality multisamples, a huge improvement compared to the content that came with earlier versions of Orion.
- Installing the Sample content is much easier than in previous editions, too, as it is performed by a dedicated Setup program.
- Look+Feel
- New skinning system introduced allows full custimization of not just all instruments and effects, but the window frames and buttons as well.
- Two skins are provided, a new V8 skin as well as an adapted “Azura” skin from V7.

Free virtual analog instruments for Windows
Roberson Audio has updated their site and released updated versions of three free virtual analog instruments for Windows:
- RA Mowg – The Roberson Audio Synthesizers interpretation of the MiniMoog Model D synthesizer.
- Oddly-Free – The Roberson Audio Synthesizers interpretation of the Arp Odyssey Mk. II synthesizer.
- Prophanity – The Roberson Audio Synthesizers interpretation of the Sequential Circuits Prophet 5 synthesizer.
Oddy-Free and Prophanity have been bumped up to version 1.4, and RA Mowg has been updated to version 1.2. The main changes to all have been the filter implementation so that these instruments have a bigger sound to them without being untrue to the original instruments.

Free virtual drum instrument plugin for Windows
Marvin Pavilion has released version 0.1 of Tromine GT, a free virtual drum instrument plugin for Windows.
Tromine GT is a Roland TR-808 style drum synthesizer.
All instruments are made with analog synthesis.

TheDrumSource – virtual drum machine instrument
Ola Wistedt and Mats Lindfors have released version 1.0 (release candidate 1) of TheDrumSource, a sample based drum machine instrument for Windows.
It has a sequencer and a built in sample browser. It looks and “feels” like a classic (x0x) hardware drum machine.
TheDrumSource is designed with the purpose to be very simple and easy to work with even if you are used to work with hardware drum machines or not. The built in sample browser in TheDrumsource makes it very easy to navigate through your samples. The sequencer can be running when looking for new samples. You will hear the sample the moment you selects it. There is also a quick button to select the previous and next sample in the same directory as the current selected sample. TheDrumsource has a very short time to get started on making your beats.
TheDrumSource features
- Built in sample browser suited for a easy workflow when working with samples. And almost all of TheDrumSource’s functions is still available while browsing.
- Built in sequencer that has 24 sequences for your patterns. The patterns are of the 16-step bar type
- Support for many sample formats (including 24 bit samples): WAV, AIFF, AIFC, AU, SND, RAW, PAF, IFF, SVX, SF, VOC, W64, MAT4, MAT5, PVF, XI, HTK, CAF, SD2, FLAC, OGG.
- A GUI that can be resized to suit you screen.
- A quick button to change the next and previous sample in current directory of the selected sample.
- A stereo output channel for each drum. And a mode to mix down all channels temporary into one stereo channel for quick tests to get you up and running a little bit faster on some hosts.
- The SYNC mode. The sequencer is synced by the host (DAW) and you control which of the 24 track to be played with MIDI (octave 2 and 3).
- The MIDI mode. The samples can be played through midi keyboard (octave 1) with the sequencer turned off.
- The RUN mode. Lets you play around with the TheDrumsource sequencer when your host (DAW) is not running.
- Clean interface so you don’t get distracted in your creative work. TheDrumsource uses context menus to make this possible.

Psychic Modulation unveils Dubtron, a bass synth for Windows
Dubtron is an Experimental Bass Synth designed for dubstep wobble bass, and more obscure bass sounds. Dubtron’s two oscillator sections utilize a special Unison detune feature where each voice has it’s own width control as well as drifting for a slow phasing effect. The filter’s each have a ‘Wub’ generator, which is the main feature responsible for that wobble effect. Layer in a sub oscillator and you’ve got a serious bass machine. These features along with various randomizers and FM capabilities give an experimental edge to your basslines, allowing for Dubtron to be used not only for bass, but also for unexpected, even atmospheric sounds.”

Freeware bus compressor effect plug-in for Windows
Platinumears has released version 2 of FL4TT3RY, a freeware bus compressor effect plug-in for Windows.
This is a gentle squashy compressor intended for use on busses, though it also works well on channels. It has a very soft knee, with a ratio that gradually increases to hard limiting, and a choice between RMS based level detection (with a window size that depends on the attack time) or a brand new peak sensing algorithm.
This unit is inspired by a particular bit of hardware that I know quite well. Its not “modelled” however: I came up with the algorithm first, thought it sounded similar, so then skinned the plug to resemble the hardware. It is definitely not a proper model, so I’m not going to name the unit in question.
Changes in FL4TT3RY 2
- Slightly gentler transfer curve brings it (subjectively) closer to the hardware that inspired it.
- Tweaked attack smoothing to make it a little more aggressive with the fastest settings.
- Tweaked release smoothing to make it pump less with the fastest settings.
- New peak sensing mode.
- External sidechain inputs.
- Left click the meter to toggle the range between 6, 12 or 18dB.
- Right click the meter to switch between Gain Reduction metering, or Gain change metering (which includes make-up gain).
