51 Frequency Modulation Continued
I was just going to try some more modulations before taking down the patch and get going with the video I had planned for tonight but I found the sound to be so pleasing and interesting I just had to record it.
It’s the FM patch from Episode 50 only this time there is just one modulator. I use two outputs of the modulator however, the regular sine and a sawtooth run through a fixed filterbank. This gives some extra interesting control over sound. But what came by accident and feels even more interesting is the variation of notes and the higher modulation index that yields a more screaming sound at times. This is what I love with this patch.
micronaut – experiment four
The very definition of getting carried away. I bought a Boss RRV-10 reverb last night, and just wanted to test it out to make sure it was all working, and 5 hours later, here we are.
This piece is done with no sequencing at all. A Max patch does the dirty work, and everything you hear except the snare drum is coming from the hardware synths, six of ’em. I’m arranging things by turning specific metro objects on and off in Max via the Korg nanoControl; they’re all quantized to the Global Clock.

This project was inspired by the Swarmatron, a hardware drone synth, handmade by Dewanatron.
It was the Swarmatron that created many of the buzzing clouds of anxiety-provoking noise used by Trent Reznor in his Oscar-winning score for “The Social Network”. Since we were curious what it would be like to play such an instrument, yet didn’t have the $3200 laying around, we thought we’d build something like it in software, and share it with you.
The Swarm is released as an OS X standalone application only. It is not available as a plug-in, but the audio output of the The Swarm may be sent to ReWire-compatible host applications.

MIDI Sequencer test
I built a cliplead patchbay MIDI sequencer using the HighlyLiquid MIDI CPU kit: highlyliquid.com/midi-controllers/midi-cpu/
The nail and cliplead design is inspired by the work of Talking Computron.
The sequencer is a CMOS 4017 decade counter.
The MIDI notes are running to a MeeBlip synth: meeblip.noisepages.com/
A clock signal is being provided by Ableton Live, which also syncs up the drum track and bassline.

Details on the new remix album from MESH
Dependent has announced the track listing for the Mesh remix album “An Alternative Solution” which holds remakes of songs from the “A Perfect Solution” studio album. All 11 tracks from “A Perfect Solution” have been given the remix treatment here. Note that the remix album retains the original’s track order as well. Included are remixes by Iris, Portion Control, Zeromancer, Parralox, and Assemblage 23. It will be a rather long waiting until you’ll be able holding “An Alternative Solution” in your hands as it will be released on May 20th only.
Fans and collectors should look out for the limited first pressing containing a bonus CD with additional remixes and rare tracks. We’ll let you know once it’s available for ordering.
