How to remove unwanted frequencies using filters

May 19, 2012 · Posted in Uncategorized · 1 Comment

Even non music-makers are aware of filters and the effect they can have on the way music sounds. What you might not be so sure of, however, is what the different varieties of filter are and how they work.

If you fall into this camp – or if you simply want a quick refresher course – check out the video above.

Spectralis groovebox +
a microkorg xl pad sound
sequenced by the spectralis

The Spectralis is the first “GrooveBox”, which combines the LIVE usability of the latest digital technology with the best elements of proven analog technology. We also have thrown in some other cool features which give the synthesizer much more flexibility than anything seen before. While traditional Sequencers are limited to playing back rhythm patterns and tone sequences, the step Sequencer of the SPECTRALIS makes possible highly complex sound creations which opens up completely new worlds of sound when used in connection with the programmable FIXED FILTER BANK. In addition to its outstanding analog sound possibilities the SPECTRALIS also provides DSP based sound creation, which takes care of all the ancillary needs for drumsounds and polyphonic voices. This sound creation is 48 voice and offers killer drum sounds, creamy pads and a lot of other goodies.

Deadmau5 – How to succeed in the music business

May 19, 2012 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Deadmau5 – How to succeed in the music business

Deadmau5 shared some advice at his tumblr sitefor musicians wanting to make a career in the music business. He offers three recommendations, whether you’re a musician with 10 fans or 10 million:

  1. You need to make a world. So you have a rollercoaster in your backyard. And it’ll be the hot thing in the neighborhood for about a week. But once everyone’s had a go… they’ll lose interest, go home n play Sega instead. What you need then, is a fuckin’ theme park… and you AND your music are the theme. People come into your theme park…..check out all this shit… buncha rides, no 2 the same, some merch here and there, special events, dolphins through hoops and all that whack shit. You want people to come to your theme park and feel like they’re a part of this world of yours.
  2. Don’t overkill 900 on the promotional shit. – I don’t read spammed to death fucking promo shit, so, the type of people i’d like to have in my theme park don’t either. Nor do i come blaring on the theme parks PA system every fucking 20 seconds hyping the same fucking ride over and over again. Also a bad look to take flyers to other peoples theme parks and start plastering posters all over the place.
  3. Avoid being invisible. Get out there and immerse yourself in the world you created, youll have fun, it’s your place for fuck’s sake. If you’re not having fun in the world you created, then you fucked something up and did it wrong. Go jump on a few rides with your fans.

Heads up: Inpressa – new multiband compressor effect plugin

May 19, 2012 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Heads up: Inpressa – new multiband compressor effect plugin

According to Crysonic, the upcoming Inpressa multiband compressor effect plugin provides zero latency plus stereo and mono compatibility combined with the company’s unique new proprietary technology in order to deliver a one of a kind type of effect.

Crysonic notes that Inpressa offers full double precision processing natively, which employs very steep 24 dB / Oct crossover filters — virtually eliminating leakage into adjacent compression bands. All available parameters are variable supporting full automation with extreme precision control. The plugin automatically chooses the most appropriate peak detection circuit depending on the audio material being worked on, which was previously impossible to do unless you had a countless number of expensive compressors.

About the effect, the manufacturer comments, “Transcending other similar plugins of its type, Inpressa is set to achieve vintage and modern sounding professional results on individual busses and the final master mix.”

At this time, not much else is known about Inpressa; however, Crysonic does say this: “The most noteworthy part of Inpressa is expressed not only by employing a new state of the art technology but understanding and providing incredibly efficient workflow without crowding the interface with ‘most of the time unnecessary’ options. Inpressa will be available soon to increase depth, definition, and loudness of all music productions.”

More details will be revealed as we get closer to Inpressa’s release (TBD).

The Trinity – A Korg Trinity Demo

May 19, 2012 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on The Trinity – A Korg Trinity Demo

THE TRINITY
Korg Trinity Pro-X 88 Keys Music/Video Demo by Ares Kalogeropoulos. Korg Trinity is a commercially successful synthesizer music workstation released by Korg in 1995. It was also the first workstation to offer modular expansion for not only sounds, but also studio-grade feature such as SCSI, ADAT, various sound engine processors, audio recording capability, and more. It was considered one of the most comprehensive music workstations, in term of features, at the time. It is affectionately referred to as the silver beast by many of its owners.

The Trinity workstation features a massive set of effects (100 Insert effects & 14 Master effects), a large graphic touchscreen (320×240) and a complete 16-track sequencer, as well as double sound generation system:

  • ACCESS (Advanced Control Combined Synthesis System). A PCM-based sound synthesis with 16 bit – 48 kHz PCM playback on a 24Mbyte ROM. However, since 2:1 data compression has been used, these are equivalent to 48Mbyte of samples held in conventional RAM. The PCM data includes well over 1,000 individual samples comprising 374 multisamples.
  • MOSS (Multi-Oscilator Synthesis System). The sound generation system of the Korg Prophecy and Z1 with: analogue modelling, VPM (Korg’s version of FM synthesis) and physical modelling (brass, reed, plucked string, bowed string, organ, electric piano modelling)

Along with the Korg Prophecy, the Korg Trinity synthesizer was a descendant of the original OASYS synthesizer, an acronym for Open Architecture Synthesis System, which was a mega-synth prototype that the company previewed in 1994 but never marketed. The foundation of the system was an open concept DSP system where the OS could load various unrelated models of different synthesis and physical modelling sound generators. It was a multiple digital signal processor (DSP) architecture, with the entire system clocking in at over 900 million instructions per second. Korg later adapted some of the core technologies and released three initial products: Trinity, Prophecy and Wavedrum.

All Sounds/patches made with Korg Trinity.
Multitrack Recording on a DAW.
Software Reverb and Delay added.

http://pittsburghmodular.com/foundation/

The Foundation is a fully modular, eurorack, analog synthesizer. A patchable system styled after the great monosynths of the past with no hardwired signal path or fixed voice architecture to restrict creativity. Driven by two wide range analog oscillators the Foundation produces a huge, warm sound that can’t be matched by digital or VST synths. All of the elements of a classic voltage controlled synthesizer are available as an open, patchable, modern synth.

Time machine: CRUMAR TRILOGY Analog Synthesizer 1981

May 18, 2012 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Time machine: CRUMAR TRILOGY Analog Synthesizer 1981

This is a short HQ sound demo of the Crumar Trilogy. I played it dry without any additional effects.

The Crumar Trilogy is a multi keyboard instrument / string machine from 1981. It has 3 polyphonic sections: ORGAN, SYNTHESIZER and STRING ENSEMBLE. The best about the Trilogy is the polyphonic synth section, which has 2 VCOs per voice, 24 dB filters which employ the famous SSM chips… The STRING ENSEMBLE and ORGAN sections sound somewhat cheesy, but hey, sometimes you need some vintage cheesy sounds 😉

Very impressive looking. It has no patch memory like you might think. The Oberheim-type led buttons just recall presets.

On a Vangelis record (I don’t remember the title) you see a picture of the Trilogy.
