Pterosaur – free synthesizer plug-in for Windows
Contralogic has released an updated version of Pterosaur, a free synthesizer plug-in for Windows.
Pterosaur is a 16 oscillator synth. It’s loosely inspired by the classic Supersaw sound of the Roland JP-8000 in that the output of each oscillator can be independently detuned and panned, creating a very rich sound.
The basic waveform produced by the oscillators is a sawtooth wave which can be morphed into a sort of saw/pulse hybrid with the mod control.
Changes in Pterosaur
- Polyphonic mode added.
- More LFO shapes.
- 3 additional oscillator waveforms (sine, triangle and square), all of which can be morphed in the same way as the sawtooth wave in the original version.
Pterosaur for Windows (VST) is available to download at no cost.

The Random Sequencer is a circuit that produces clocked randomly changing control voltages. These can also be locked into loops that repeat every 8, 16 or 32 steps.
This is an open hardware project – all the project files (Eagle CAD projects, Gerbers PCB files, a Mouser BOM and Illustrator/PDF front panel designs) are available on this page, covered by a Creative Commons Attribution Share-a-like license, which allows for commercial use.
This is a relatively advanced DIY project, and I’m not able to provide support. I am not selling PCBs, kits or finished modules, but hopefully all the information you’d need to get your own is here.

History
Introduced in 1976, the Ampex ATR-102 2-Track Tape Recorder was a near-instant hit, thanks to its revolutionary servo-controlled reel motors and capstan, which provided smooth, continuous tape tension and handling. The large capstan, and absence of pinch rollers, provided nearly non-existent speed drift and ultra-low flutter. The clever ATR-102 design allowed users to change out heads and guides in mere minutes, with a 1″ head being a very popular “hot-rod” modification in more recent years — especially when running at 15 IPS (inches per second). The ATR’s role in modern recording history is so prevalent, that it would be easier to list classic albums that weren’t mixed down on this machine, rather than to try to list all those that were.
Time machine: MULTIVOX RHYTHM ACE FR-3 | Vintage Rhythm Box
This is a quite rare little analog rhythm box from 1979. The features are nothing special, but the sound overall is much better than other rhythm boxes of that era. It has a deep bassdrum and a crispy snare.
It’s from MULTIVOX, not ACE Electronics (former Roland). Before the Multivox came along, Ace Electronics made several rhythm boxes which are also called “Rhythm Ace”. These have nothing to do with the Multivox. The mechanical hardware looks to me like old Korg Minipops units. Was Korg involved? 😉
All rhythms are combinable. I played the Multivox with a little reverb.

Equipment used: OSC OSCar, Roland SH-101, Roland SH-09, Waldorf Blofeld, Korg MS2000R, Novation Supernova II, Boss DR-770, Electro-Harmonix Memory Boy, Gretsch customised Pro Jet.
Recorded and mastered in Logic using various Logic plugins.

LittleGPTracker – music tracker optimised to run on portable game consoles
LittleGPTracker (a.k.a ‘The piggy’) is a music tracker optimised to run on portable game consoles. It is currently running on Game Park’s GP2x & Caanoo, PSP, Dingoo, Windows, Mac OSX (intel/ppc) & Linux (Debian).
It implements the user interface of littlesounddj, a very famous tracker for the Gameboy platform that has been tried and tested by many users over the years, leading to a little complex but yet extremely efficent way of working.
Piggy currently supports 8 monophonic 16Bit/44.1Khz stereo sample playback channels. Additionally, the program can drive MIDI instruments (with the gp32 and gp2x a custom MIDI interface is required).
All versions are available for free ; however, if you like the project and want to contribute, don’t hesitate to do a small donation. If you’d like to see the piggy wiggling on your platform, you can try donation too, DS users can forget about it, the console is not powerful enough to drive the piggy as is. Steely Dan III by Beat Frequency – experimental theremin music with effects

Recorded in one take. Effects chain: ModTone BuzzBoy in etherwave standard theremin w/ ESPE01 mod and effects loop, to Marshall Echohead Delay, to Electro Harmonix Talking Machine w/ expression pedal. Some dynamic compression and reverb added in post-production.

quick look @ ‘Tabletop’ via a 3rd generation iPad. great workstation / creative outlet for music-making in iOS. base-version comes with a significant amount of devices. if other big-name synth / plug-ins were invited to submit devices to this, it would definitely have potential to explode.
