DPO + Maths + Noisering + QMMG
Three takes of (basically) the same patch, played back simultaneously.
Make Noise DPO (VCO-A Lin FM of VCO-B, fixed index), controlled by Noisering outputs 1 and 2 (via Doepfer A-156 Dual Quantizer). Scaled versions of these voltages are also controlling the Rise, Fall and “Both” (timebase) values of three envelopes on two Maths modules, which are opening two LPG channels and two VCA channels on the QMMG (2x LPG –> VCA stereo arrangement), and are triggered by the Trig Outs of the A-156. Both LPGs are fed by the sine out of DPO VCO-B.
The Wogglebug’s clock out is patched to the External Control input on the Noisering, and its Stepped output (through an attenuator) is controlling the A-156’s Transpose amount.

Oberheim OBXa “Space Ocean”
About the synth: The OB-Xa is a massive analog synthesizer with a very familiar and classic Oberheim sound. Its sound, size and power are very similar to the Prophet 5 from Sequential. However this one has up to 8 voices which can be split, layered and stored! The OB-Xa was available in four, six or eight voice polyphonic models. They all featured patch memories, also in varying degrees. A minimum of 32 patches were available on early models (4 banks of 8). The maximum amount of patch memory storage found on many OB-Xa’s is 120 patch memories. All models of OB-Xa, however, featured the new Curtis chips which offered great stability for an analog synth and they are attributed to its great filters and sounds.
The OB-X was very similar to the OB-Xa except that its voices could not be split or layered and, more significantly, the OB-X had a lowpass-only discrete SEM 12dB/oct state variable filter, which had a great and classic Oberheim sound. The OB-Xa changed that in an attempt to economize manufacturing and increase stability by switching to CEM3320 Curtis chips for its filters. The Xa offered two switchable filter modes: 12 dB/oct (2-pole) or 24 dB/oct (4-pole). This hardware change resulted in a more agressive sound, not quite as creamy as the OBX original, but what still became a “bread and butter” sound of the Oberheim line.
Splitting the keyboard mode separates the OB-Xa into two 4-voice synths with two available patches. The Layer mode plays the two patches simultaneously. There are also some added effect sources, perfect for any analog polysynth, including portamento, unison, sample & hold, chord memory and three LFO’s!
OMD is on the move
Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark have posted an update on the recording progress for their new upcoming studio album “English Electric”.
Here’s what singer Andy McCluskey had to say: “After a few weeks concentrating on rehearsals and concerts, we shall be focussing exclusively on spending September and October finishing English Electric. Many of the tracks are ready to mix and 3 need vocals finally recording.”
OMD’s previous (11th) studio album, “History of Modern”, was released on 20 September 2010 selling well over 100,000 copies in Europe. McCluskey also appeared at a round table panel discussion on electronic music recently as part of EMI’s ‘Electrospective’ campaign.

DEVO goes dog hunting in the presidential elections
DEVO is taking a swipe at Mitt Romney with a track titled, “Don’t Roof Rack, Me Bro! (Remember Seamus)”. If you’re dodgy on the reference, the forthcoming political anthem revolves around a 1983 incident involving Romney’s family dog, a kennel crate, and the roof of their family station wagon.
The track spearheads a new campaign led by Devo founder Gerald V. Casale called Remember Seamus, whose main cause is to “make 2012 the year where animals like Seamus are valued and honesty is praised.” It’s no surprise then the band’s also fully supporting Dogs Against Romney, and is also behind a forthcoming mobile app/game titled, The Crate Escape: Seamus Unleashed. Actually, that last part just has to be surprising.
Fans can look for the track on August 25th via The Orchard. However, the following day, National Dog Day, will see the release of the aforementioned game.
Devo’s Jerry Casale wants it to be known that their newest song, “Don’t Roof Rack Me, Bro,” isn’t meant as a partisan statement – even though it viciously mocks Mitt Romney for strapping his Irish Setter, Seamus, to the roof of his car for a 1983 family vacation.
“This isn’t a red-state thing or Devo stumping for Obama,” he says. “But I think any animal lover that hears the story will learn so much about the character flaw of Romney. It’s just a deal-breaker about the man. My God, the world is a scary place with seven billion people. What you want in a leader is a guy with some humanity at his core. I just don’t feel that Mitt does.”

Review: Magellan soft synth
Yonac have unleashed an astonishingly powerful synth, with features that will be welcomed by both new and experienced users.
Magellan comes with two independent synth engines that can run simultaneously. Use one synth for bass or FX, the other for lead or pads. Or couple the synths together to get the full growl of 6 oscillators, 4 filters and 4 LFOs running at the same time! Absolutely NO samples used: only actual, realtime audio synthesis. Each Magellan synth engine has 3 virtual analog oscillators, with oscs 1 & 2 capable of true PWM wave generation.
