Closer look at the R.A. Moog 701 Drum Synthesizer
In 1970 Bob Moog built for Eric Siday an electronic drum synthesizer with the following modules:
– 701Drum Synthesizer
– 702 Percussion Synthesizer
– 903 Noise
– 912 Enveloppe Follower
– Programmer
– Wheels encoder
– Keyboard controller
The 701 and 702 modules are prototypes never and went in production.
It seems that there are some missing modules from the original configuration.
This unique system is owned now by the ” Museum of music”
located in Paris France.
About Eric Siday
Eric siday was born in the suburb of London in 1905.
When he was 14 he received the Prosper Sainton scholarship at the Royal Academy of Music, London.
His first steady bread was playing for the “local cinema” silent movies.
He was composer and arranger and realized musics for commercials and jingles for radios ( ABC / CBS / Pepsi cola / American express )
In 1947 he composed a violin concerto in the “Bop” Jazz idiom.
He created his own recording studio (surely one of the first home studio).
In the middle 50’s, he was aware of electronic music – John Cage (the prepared piano) and the French Music Concrete .
He was the fisrt to apply electronics sounds in commercials .
He used : Ondes Martenot / Ondioline / Violon amplified / Céleste / Moog Modular
and this unique Moog Percussion synthesizer.
He was the second customer of Bob Moog and bring a great support to the Moog company.

Here is my first video of the “R.A. Moog 701 Drum Synthesizer”. I managed to get some sounds out of it – even though it was meant to *work* with the full “one-off” system as built by Bob in 1970. I think in the system it might behave a little more “drum-like”…!?! Ha!
Checking out CasioTron Beats
CasioTron Beats re-creates the rhythm patterns found on the vintage home keyboards of the 70’s and 80’s. These popular keyboards were analogue and have now become collectors items because of their warm sound.
This particular version takes the drum sounds from the then popular Casiotone MT-70 which although was more modern than the earlier models, it is still analogue as you will be able to tell from the sound.
Remember those bossa-nova and samba beats? Well here they are!
Groovesizer Alpha – first taster
The Groovesizer is an arduino-based DIY 32-step sequencer / synth – the project is based around a custom PCB that in it current form features 4 rows of 8 tactile switches and leds – the final version will add a fifth row of buttons and leds dedicated to control functions. It features an embedded hackduino, an 8-bit DAC option, an LM386 amp output, MIDI in/out/sync and is configurable to work with some of the most popular existing arduino audio projects. Firmware can be updated from the arduino IDE, either via an AVR ISP programmer, or by flashing the chip on an arduino board and swapping it out. Furthest along in its development is the Alpha firmware which features a 3 oscillator monosynth. Time machine: PPG Waveterm A – Original Factory Sample Library (8bit)
Vintage synthesizer demo of the PPG Waveterm. The PPG Waveterm A – or just PPG Waveterm – was PPG’s first entry into a full studio solution. The PPG Waveterm A does NOT produce any sound itself meaning you will need a PPG Component like the PPG Wave 2.2, PPG Wave 2.3 or PPG EVU if you want to hear anything you do on it. The PPG Waveterm made PPG owners able to produce their own wavetables and to save their own programs to floppy disk instead of tape using the Cassette interface. It also made PPG owners able to create songs and to – most importantly to most – sample something and play it back using the PPG Wave 2.2. The PPG Waveterm is based on an old german computer called Eltec Eurocom II based on the Motorola 6809 processor, and can be set up to run the ‘ordinary’ Eurocom II software (Flex 9). You can also hook up a keyboard and a printer to it to have a ‘fully featured’ home computer – a very expensive one though. The PPG Waveterm was not cheap – but it was a giant leap in music technology, and the quality of the samples you could produce using the PPG Waveterm was astonishing back then in all its 8 bit glory.

The Waveterm A is the heart of the legendary PPG system and based on an old german computer called Eltec Eurocom II with Motorola 6809 processor.

Synth music: Vince Clarke appears on new Robert Marlow album
There are no less than 2 new Robert Marlow CDs in the pipeline holding new tracks. The first one is called “The Future” and is a 7-track mini album holding an exclusive Vince Clarke remix of “No Heart” next to 6 new tracks. The release will be followed a few months later by the remix album “The Future – Remixes” holding remixes by such artists like Diskodiktator, Framework, Cobalt 60/K-Bereit, Eddie Bengtsson (Page /SMPJ), Per Aksel Lundgreen (ex-Apoptygma Berzerk), Kellertechnik, KATelectric and many more.
