Roland FA-08 Workstation – First Look
Dave Bryce checks out Roland’s first new workstation since the Fantom-G, the FA series.
Roland has announced two new workstation keyboards, the FA-08 and FA-06, which it says meet the needs of anyone who wants an instrument that they can use both on stage and in the studio.
Featuring a built-in audio interface, DAW integration, more than 2000 sounds from the Integra-7 sound module and an 88-note weighted action keyboard, the FA-08 weighs in at 16kg. It comes with a 16-track sequencer, and each of the 16 available parts can access its own effects engine, which sports 67 effect types. The UK price is £1529.
Full specs are below. The FA-06 boasts very similar specs but comes with a 61-note velocity-sensitive keyboard. It retails for £975. You can find out more about both models on the Roland website.

ReDominator is an emulation of the classic Alpha Juno 1/2 (JU-1/2), a polyphonic DCO (digitally controlled oscillator) based synth from 1986. The JU-1/2 became popular in the early 90’s techno and rave scene particularly by the classic Hoover sound (which ReDominator attempts to emulate accurately). But beyond those niche sounds there lays a versatile synthesizer that does bass, pads, leads, organs and a lot of other sounds waiting to be discovered!

Limitation drives creativity… and let’s face it, these old gaming consoles make awesome sounds. That’s why I’ve made my newest album, Destroy All Presets on my Game Boy Advance.
My last album, Beeps and Smudges, was made on an iPhone, mostly using the Nanoloop app. This time around I decided to kick it up a notch and use one of the old Nanoloop carts to compose the bulk of my music on a GBA. Aside from the chiptune beats, I also spiced this album up with homemade synths, circuit bent toys, and my own mix of nerdy/pop vocals.
A music video for “Lava” off of Destroy All Presets, the new album by Doctor Popular (coming on 01/22/2014). Shot in half an hour on my iPhone using the Mixx app (which means linear editing, like shooting on an old VHS tape).
