Electronic music: Jacob 2-2 / Cabazon BlipVert

Jacob 2-2 is a Brooklyn-based sound and video artist who takes his name from an obscure, late-70s movie about a fearless kid investigator. “It’s probably one of the weirdest things I’ve ever seen,” says the producer, whose first name is David but who prefers not to give his last name. It makes total sense when you listen to his music: there’s a kid-like wonder to it, crossed with a dose of playful humor and an bunch of weird 80s synths. It’s a lot like Look Around You condensed into musical form.
David’s prized possession is an old Roland Juno 6. That particular Juno has no presets at all, so every time he gets something he likes he has to record it immediately. “I always think to myself, ‘I’d better record it now or else I’ll never be able to recreate it.’” Its warm sound in turn drives his beats and effects, filled with pings and blips that could be straight from any 80s video game. Sometimes his beats are muffled, while at other times they shine through clearly.
So far, David has put out three EPs, two self-released through his Bandcamp: (The Gifted Child and Cabazon). His most recent EP, Fantasiarexia, was picked up by Jakub Alexander of Moodgadget. He’s also had a couple compilation releases and a handful of remixes for Aleph, Starfawn, Macka and others. (You can listen to all of them on his SoundCloud page.) A motion graphic designer by trade, David also makes his own videos for his live show, performing against a background of material loosely cut together to his music and full of weird and wonderful nostalgia and color.

Review: Massive beats from Nuclues SoundLab – Celluloide Beats
Time again for a review here at Steelberry Clones – this time we have taken a closer look at Nucleus SoundLabs’ new Reason Refill called Celluloide Beats.
To begin with Celluloide Beats consists of around 50 (x8) or so Combinator patches and associated sounds recreated as REX-files. Due to the way they are built they may easily be run in anything from 60/70 BPMs up to 270 > or so BPMs – it will still sound great. To get an overview of what you are getting I would loosely categorize it as multi-sampled drums, beats and percussions into a massively unique and powerful mix of rhythms and sounds that would easily fit into dubstep, electro, house, techno type music, but I would not limit it to that since there are several intriguing ambient type sounds with a real sci-fi / cinematic approach to them.
A good thing with the CMBs are that they are very easy to work with, partly because each CMB is more or less a full mix in itself with limited need for further mixing and mastering, and partly because they are using fairly common rhythms meaning that the tempo and the sequenced beats are not overly experimental. Each Combinator patch in a Celluloid Beats contains 8 loops – 1 original loop and 7 creative loop remixes. This is achieved, according to Nucleus, by using the Slice Edit Mode on Dr. OctoRex to change filtering, decay, volume and more on a per-step basis for each loop. Going farther than that, unique FX are added to each patch which are used to effect specific loop slices – so each slice in a loop can have a different distortion, filtering or delay. The resulting loop remixes sound incredibly complex, but they certainly aren’t complicated to use.

Recreating Marvin Gaye’s 1982 electronic Soul ballad Sexual Healing using Logic
Central to the groove is the Roland TR-808 drum machine – in fact, rumour has it that this was one of the first commercial hits to utilise the 808. Though the beat and groove sound simple, there’s a lot of syncopation so it’s essential to study the original beat. Try importing the track and slowing down the drum-only intro using Logic’s varispeed feature.
Sound Lab Mark II Playing Anitras’ Dance From Peer Gynt
Edvard Grieg’s Anitras’ Dance from Peer Gynt reallized on the Sound Lab Mark II and ULTIMATE analog synthesizers.
“This is multi-track MIDI driving MIDI to CV which drives the MFOS Sound Lab Mark II and the MFOS Sound Lab ULTIMATE. The MFOS Gate and CV Distributor and MFOS Delayed Modulation Module were also used in the production. Since both synths are mono all MIDI was broken down to mono tracks (no chords allowed) and each MIDI track played through the MIDI to CV convertor/synth combination one at a time. I set each patch to what I thought sounded good in the position and I think in the end it seems to work. I tweaked and mixed and tweaked and mixed and tweaked and… I’ll stop there. ALL sounds are purely from the MIDI driven synths including the triangle. I wanted it to sound analog synthetic but not too “cheesy” (you’ll have to be the judge… be kind). Reverb and panning were applied during mix down. I used SONAR 8.0 Producer to mix down the tracks (well over 20 stereo). Sorry about the sucky quality of the video.
