Eileen Hedy Schultz, member of the board of directors at SVA, introduces artist Laurie Anderson’s address. It’s 30+ minutes long, but her speeches are often fascinating and provocative, like when she re-contextualizes Karl Rove’s words as a manifesto for artists, when offers her take on the Maker movement, or when she looks at the role of beauty in science.

Moog Micromoog demo
A demo of the Moog Micromoog, the “baby” Minimoog with one oscillator and sub oscillator. Plenty of routing capabilities can create standard Moog bass/lead, but also incredibly crazy FX. Micromoog is a single-oscillator mono-synth, designed as a budget performance Moog. But it’s an inexpensive alternative to the Minimoog. In fact, it is often used as just a stand-alone filter processor since it has a filter that is virtually identical to the one found in the Minimoog, and it accepts external sounds for processing through itself (all at a fraction of the price for a Mini)! It also employs a ribbon controller (which was a cool new feature) for pitch bending. Notice that there are still plenty of knobs to give you access to the shape of your sounds! Unfortunately the construction feels kind of cheap.

Icebreaker Audio has released the PortaSynth and Calc-U-Synth instruments for Native Instruments’ Kontakt 5 platform.
PortaSynth is an emulation of a circuit-bent Yamaha PortaSound PSS130 from 1987. It also includes PortaDrums – a drum machine based on the percussion samples from the same instrument.
Calc-U-Synth is a full emulation of the Casio VL-Tone’s programmable synth engine for Kontakt. It features faithful emulations of all of the VL-Tone’s parameters.

Giorgio Moroder to participate on Daft Punk´s new album
Synth and disco pop legend Giorgio Moroder has hooked up with Daft Punk during the recording of the French duo’s new album.
During an interview at the International Music Summit in Ibiza, he revealed that he’d laid down a “rap”, as part of the sessions for the long awaited follow up to Daft Punk’s 2005 album Human After All. According to Moroder, the duo invited him to talk about his life in a vocal booth filled with a range of microphones old and new (all the way from the 60s to today). The engineer explained that the mic they would end up using would depend on what decade of his life he was talking about. When Moroder quizzed the engineer as to whether or not anyone would actually be able to tell the difference anyway, he was assured “They will know”.
Such a painstaking/self-indulgent approach to one vocal performance might perhaps shed a little light on why the new album from the duo is taking so long to emerge. They’re reported to have drafted in some other heavyweight names too – Nile Rodgers of Chic recently revealed that he’s been involved, and earlier this year American songwriter Paul Williams (the man behind hits for the Carpenters, among others) mentioned that he had also been writing songs for the duo. No word yet on when the album in question is likely to arrive; more news when we have it.

RCA Theremin & Talking Machine
The theremin in this video is the instrument that once belonged to Julius Goldberg, the partner and personal assistant of Russian inventor Leon Theremin. This is a 1929 RCA theremin that was customized by Goldberg in the early 1930’s and provided with “lightning bolt” volume and pitch antennas. In this video, I am using an ELECTRO-HARMONIX “Talking Machine” on a fixed, open “AH” sound, which lends to the tone a remarkable likeness to a human tenor.
The theremin has often been compared to an “electric soprano” but used with the Talking Machine, it can also be an ELECTRIC TENOR or an ELECTRIC BARITONE!
The composition is the famous tenor aria, NESSUN DORMA, from the opera TURANDOT by Italian composer Giacomo Puccini.
