Electronic music artist Solvent on a Eurorack jam w/Modcan Dual Delay

For over a decade, Jason Amm’s work as Solvent has neatly defied categorization. His music is too sweetly melodic for techno or acid, his compositions too fiendishly detailed for synth-pop. He was too steeped in the sounds of the ‘80s to participate in the incipient IDM scene; he was briefly lumped in with the short-lived electroclash movement, only to outlive it; he’s played “minimal wave” parties and goth clubs, indie-rock shows and techno all-nighters. But even as words fail in the face of Solvent’s music, its pleasures are anything but elusive.
Today, Zimbabwe-born Jason Amm lives in Toronto, ON, where he spends his time obsessively grappling with an outsized collection of vintage analog synthesizers, samplers, and sequencers. Solvent first materialized in 1997 with a string of singles and full-lengths (1998’s Solvent, 1999’s Solvently One Listens) on Amm’s own Suction Records, the Toronto-based
label he founded with Lowfish’s Gregory DeRocher. The watershed release Solvent City (2001) on Berlin-based Morr Music introduced Amm’s sound to a wider audience, and Apples & Synthesizers (2004) marked Solvent’s move to Ghostly International. Along with notable remixes of artists including Soft Cell, Alter Ego, and Adult., Solvent tracks have appeared on high-profile DJ mixes and seminal compilations.
Solvent’s most recent record on Ghostly International, 2010?s Subject to Shift, marks a turn for the darker as Amm embraces his love of the abrasive sounds of acid and industrial. And while a sinister tone or two now dances among Solvent’s sparkling hooks and bright streaks of synthesizer, and while Amm’s music drifts even further from accepted genre-specific reference points, Solvent’s sound has only deepened. Modular synthesizer: In the Technetronic Era
4MS Rotating Clock Divider and Make Noise Maths with a Synthesizers.com Q960 controlling the Fall rate of the Maths channel 4. CH4 is the trigger for the RCD and the CH1 of Maths is using a trigger from a Moon 554 Octal Clock Divider to ping the Rotate input of the RCD once every 32 beats of the RCD.
The RCD outputs 2, 3, 4 and 6 are to the pitched vco voices. The pitch data is from a Q119 sequencer and an STG Soundlabs Voltage Mini Store.
Another vco is using the SUM of the Maths through a quantizer for the arpeggiated voice.
Other delays and dividers are timed from the channels off the RCD
BassBot TT303 & XoxboX – a comparative
In this track the two 303 Clones are used 50/50
the XoxboX (xoxshop.de version) and the new BassBot TT303 are harmonizing together very good. The TT303 has some special sweetspots the XoX doesn’t have this way – and vice versa…
So it’s the best to get both, then you can realy cover the whole spectrum of an original TB303 (and even more).
Btw. the TT303 is build in very bad quality and i am shure it will not last very long. Therefore the price (630€ !) is only a joke, the XoxboX in full aluminum box costs much less and sounds even as good and in some things even better….

Listen to the sounds of Oberheim OB-Xa

The Oberheim OB-Xa was Oberheim’s overhaul of their first compact synthesizer, the OB-X. The OB-Xa was released in December 1980, a year after the OB-X was released. Instead of discrete circuits for oscillators and filters, the OB-Xa (and the Oberheim synths to follow) switched to Curtis integrated circuits. This made the inside of the synth less cluttered, reducing the labor required to replace bad parts, and reducing the cost of manufacture. However, today it’s much easier to fix an OB-X than an OB-Xa, as Curtis parts are getting scarcer, whereas discrete parts used in the OB-X are almost always readily available.
Aside from hardware changes, the OB-Xa had better interface features than the OB-X. These included being able to split the keyboard into two halves with different voices and the ability to layer voices to create thicker sound (essentially making two notes sound for every key pressed). Polyphony stayed the same – again 4,6 and 8-voice models were offered.
One function that did disappear from the OB-X voice architecture was cross modulation, or frequency modulation of the first VCO with the second VCO. When done with analogue circuits, it’s a unique sound made famous by the Sequential Circuits Prophet 5 and its poly-mod section. The lack of this feature somewhat reduced the range of sounds possible on the OB-Xa.

A sound installation that uses the Touch Board to create a ‘scientific skin’ that responds to touch with sound.
“In early 2013 Sabine Seymour of Moondial approached us and asked whether we’d be interested in developing a piece of work which could live for three months in Vienna’s MAK Museum. We asked artist Fabio Antinori, designer Alicja Pytlewska to work with us to explore the relationship between interface, interaction, printing and sound. What we created was an interactive installation which invited visitors to approach and even touch three interactive screenprints. The output of the interaction was a generative soundscape which will continue to evolve as the piece is interacted with. The project was full of technical challenges whether it was pushing the Touch Board to work with 2M high sensors, large scale printing on Tyvek or most importantly, developing a graphical language that could tie the project together. The CasioTone 101 (CT-101) is a VERY basic analog synth from Casio circa 1981. The keyboard has 49 full-size keys and is finished in satin black painted metal, has wooden end-cheeks and a wood grain finish underneath the front of the keys. It gives your studio a good analog/vintage feel. Most sounds are very basic and fairly unusable. However, its organ tones are pretty good as well as its ‘Cosmic Tone’ patch, which uses two oscillators tuned an octave apart, and as the keys are held down, the sound drops an octave as oscillator 1 fades up, and oscillator 2 fades down.
