20 most influential albums of all time…
….as shown in Times magazine.
Please note that Kraftwerk came in as number eleven
on this list.
More surprisingly David Bowies album ” David Bowie, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars” came in as number three – I have personally always been much more inspired by “Low” and “Scary Monsters”
The 20 most influential albums
1 The Velvet Underground, The Velvet Underground & Nico Hardly anybody bought it, as the saying goes, but everyone who did formed a band.
2 Beatles, Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band Created the idea of using the recording studio as an instrument.
3 David Bowie, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars The arrival of postmodernism in rock’s most glamorous self-fulfilling prophecy.
4 Patti Smith, Horses Pioneered vast new territories for women in popular music.
5 Beach Boys, Pet Sounds The instrumentation, the harmonies, the arrangements, the sheer ambition.
6 Beatles, Revolver Goodbye “pop group”, hello “rock band”.
7 The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Are You Experienced? Shaped our sonic world – the template for guitar heroes everywhere.
8 Bob Dylan, Highway 61 Revisited How does it feel? Like a whole new world just opened up.
9 Public Enemy, It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back Hip-hop comes of age.
10 Sex Pistols, Never Mind the Bollocks… Rendered the rock dinosaurs extinct (for a while).
11 Kraftwerk, Trans-Europe Express It sounded like the future then; eerily, it still does now.
12 Michael Jackson, Thriller The last quarter of a century of R&B starts here.
13 Nirvana, Nevermind Rendered the rock dinosaurs extinct (again).
14 NWA, Straight Outta Compton Created the template for gangsta rap.
15 Aretha Franklin, I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You A soul masterpiece, and an album whose anthems radiated out into the wider culture.
16 Ramones, Ramones Rock’s ultimate palate-cleanser. Generations of punks started here.
17 Marvin Gaye, What’s Going On Motown finds its social conscience.
18 The Flying Burrito Brothers, The Gilded Palace of Sin It was largely ignored at the time, but where would alt-country be without it?
19 Bob Marley and the Wailers, Live! Reggae goes global.
20 Joni Mitchell, Blue Searching for sensitive singer-songwriters? Here’s the source.

Electronic download pack for a nice price (4.99€)

Glitch Gumbo Vol 1 is a new download pack featuring electronic breaks and percussion loops. It is aimed at adventurous producers of breaks, IDM, techno and other electronic music styles. Glitch Gumbo Vol 1 is available in PC and Mac loop formats at the introductory price of 4.99 EUR.
The emphasis of this download pack is on experimental breaks and beats, while retaining a good dose of funk and groove. The loops build on ideas from IDM, techno and hip-hop to create an original collection of warped percussive sounds. The consistent use of timestretching, granular synthesis and programmed beat deconstruction techniques makes for a futuristic sounding download pack.
The loops are ideal for layering on top of other beats and textures. For the more experimental producers, they also lend themselves nicely to beat slicing, pitch shifting and other DSP trickery. Lastly, the beats can be used for spicing up hip-hop rhythms with a touch of glitch. All loops contain a convenient BPM tempo indication in the track title.
The Atypical Audio website provides previews of the loops as well as a Glitch Gumbo free download pack. This pack contains similar sounding loops made during the production of Glitch Gumbo Vol 1. Separate sounds are also made available for free in the form of two kits for Native Instruments’ Battery. All files can be downloaded from the Atypical Audio website.
– Glitch Gumbo Vol 1
– Electronic breaks and percussion loops
– Instant Download Pack of 66 loops
– Acid Loops & Apple Loops formats
– 16 bit / 44.1 kHz
– Royalty free
– Available from January 2008 on the Atypical Audio website

Jean Michel Jarre on tour in Scandinavia…
…and best of all, he will not go with his more recent ambient electro stuff, but rather make a show covering the gross part of the Oxygene album :-). Which in my mind is one of his best, after Zoolook I stopped purchasing his later stuff, which I believe was noteven close to his previous work.
[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NYQiJJ3mJ8k]
Novation Nocturn
Novation unveils a new USB controller called Nocturn. Featuring the latest Automap Universal 2.0 software, exclusive to Novation controllers, Nocturn provides automatic, instant and intelligent control of all automatable plug-ins within every major sequencer, including Pro Tools.
Features :
– 8 touch-sensitive rotary encoders, each equipped with a bright eleven-LED ring
– 8 user-assignable illuminated buttons
– smooth, professional 45mm cross-fader
– Novation’s unique ‘speed dial’; a touch-sensitive rotary encoder that instantly takes control of whatever your mouse is focused on!
Probably the most interesting aspect of this controller is bundled software that features a “heads-up transparent control GUI” that places a “transparent control map across your computer screen, to be recalled or hidden at will.” Simply boot up the plug-in, and you’ll see at a glance how the parameters are automatically assigned to each of Nocturn’s controls. An instant click and control ‘learn’ function is also available for quick re-assigning of controls, or for creating your own controller map in seconds. Multiple page options mean that you can assign a potentially infinite number of parameters for each plug-in.
