ReBirth For iPad Reborn – lots of new features
ReBirth – the seminal software studio – has gotten some love from Propellerhead, with a new update.
Here’s what’s new in ReBirth 1.3:
- Duo Mode – flip instruments around and jam with a friend on the same iPad
- MIDI sync – sync ReBirth to your DAW, MIDI hardware or other apps
- Background mode – keep ReBirth playing in the background when slaved to other apps
- SoundCloud Sharing – share your ReBirth music on SoundCloud
- iTunes export – export your track to iTunes on your computer
- Various bug fixes and performance enhancements
Propellerhead describes ReBirth as a ‘Techno Micro Composer’, emulating three of the backbone devices of electronic dance music: the Roland TB-303 Bass synth and the Roland TR-808 and 909 drum machines.

The 1980s brought us some pretty cool production techniques. I often try to emulate them in Ableton. One of the more timestamped effects is gated reverb. Producers wanted huge drum sounds, but didn’t want the drums washed out in reverb. The solution was found by placing a gate after the reverb. This will suddenly silence the reverb once it drops to a certain level. Think Phil Collins’ “Coming in the Air Tonight.” If you have ever wanted your drums to sound like they were being played by Godzilla in the Grand Canyon, this is the technique for you.
I found myself looking for those 80s drum sounds and created an Ableton Live effect rack called the AfroDJMac Gated Reverb Rack. It’s a pretty simple but very useful effect rack. It gives you control over various reverb parameters and various gate parameters. Together you should be able to dial in the exact gated reverb sound you are going for.

Logic Tutorial: Resampling Pads Using EXS24 + Sculpture
Logic Pro user Matt Shadetek demonstrates resampling using Logic’s EXS24 and Sculpture, details below:
In this tutorial we introduce the concept of resampling: we’ll take an existing part of our track, in this case a synth chord played on Sculpture, and convert it to audio so that we can manipulate it further using Logic’s EXS24 sampler. Our goal in this example is to create a sound I associate with old school underground dance music including 90s house, hardcore and jungle: take a chord, put it into a sampler and then repitch the chord it by playing on a keyboard. The parallel harmonic movement that results can create an interesting, slightly dark feeling.
The next step is to make those chords sustain by using the looping functions in the sampler. This will produce looping artifacts in some cases, one problem being that the loop will playback faster if we play it at a higher pitch. We might not always want this, but in this case it adds an interesting uneven rhythmic feeling to our resampled sounds and completes the sound. This technique can be used for all kinds of sounds and was a popular technique in creating some of the best early drum and bass ‘hoover’ style basslines. Nils is a real time sound effect machine with a minimalistic looper. It comes with bitcrush, delay and gain for distortion. As input you can use the internal microphone, your earpods or accessories like iRig. Can also be used as a sampler, by holding the delay buffer and changing its phase. Rayblaster employs a new synthesis technique called Impulse Modelling Synthesis (IMS)
Opposed to using looped waveforms, Impulse Modelling Synthesis creates its sound by using short bursts of energy, which are then combined to form its sound. Allowing free manipulation of pitch, time and timbre in real-time, to create complex compositions.
IMS no longer requires a separate filter section, its oscillators can authentically mimic the filter sound of other synthesizers and filters, using one of the factory impulse presets or by simply importing one of your own impulses. RayBlaster is capable of modelling both the sound of existing filters, as well as create completely new artificial filters, exclusive to Rayblaster.
Next to importing filter characteristics into its oscillators, Rayblaster also offers resynthesize options to import the waveform of any other source or synthesizer.
