Among the first in Roland’s amazing JUNO family! Six analog voices of polyphony and patch memory storage!! The Roland Juno-60 is a classic six voice polyphonic analog synthesizer with 56 patch memory for your sounds. Although the sound architecture is rather basic, it has an excellent analogue sound. The Juno-60 can produce great basses / sequences with its fast envelopes. It can also produce warm smooth pads with its excellent filters.
The Juno-60 was used by many professionals like Eurythmics, Howard Jones, the Madonna producers, Paul Van Dyk and many more… it has the DCB interface – the predecessor of MIDI. With a DCB to MIDI interface it is very easy to integrate the instrument in a midi setup.
To my ears the JUNO-60 sounds far better than the very similar JUNO-106 (I had both). The Juno-60 has snappier envelopes and a fater chorus. The difference is clearly notable. IMO the Juno-60 ist the best sounding Juno. But all Junos can sound great… Please note, I am talking about the original Juno series from the eighties.
I played the JUNO-60 without any additional FX or EQ (except the intro music – this is a multi track recording). Excuse the slight distortion in the first minute.

Another monophonic analog TB-303 clone! The FB 383 is a re-packaged version of the MB33 with a special front-panel design as part of an exclusive deal with Turnkey music shop UK. Just like the MB33, the FB 383 offers all the same basic sounds and controls as the original TB-303 in a 1-unit rack module. It has just 8 basic knobs for the same basic 303-like control: tune, filter cutoff, resonance, envmod, accent and decay. Unlike the 303 however, the oscillator can be varied from sawtooth to square from a knob on the front! Also featured is an external audio input to the filter for processing other elements.
TB303 is a monophonic analog bass synthesizer married to a pattern-based step sequencer released in 1982. It features a single analog oscillator with two waveforms (ramp or square) and has a simple but excellent VCF filter with resonance, cut-off, and envelope controls. There are also knobs to adjust tuning, envelope decay, tempo and accent amount.

Forgotten Keys has updated the Roland CompuRhythm CR-78 drum machine sample library for Native Instruments Kontakt.
Roland CompuRhythm CR-78 library updated with Kontakt 4 style graphics, new samples taken at various accent levels, more control over individual sound parameters and a Presets menu. Kontakt 3 version also updated.

The Roland CompuRhythm CR-78 was released in 1978 and was Roland’s first drum machine to feature user-programmable rhythms along with its 34 pre-sets. Each of the four programmable rhythm slots could hold either four sound tracks, or three sounds and an accent track.
There are 14 analogue instrument voices which have their own distinctive sound. One such sound is METALLIC BEAT which has its own volume slider and attempts to add a more realistic metallic attack to the CYMBAL sounds and always plays the same pattern as those sounds.
Roland also released a cut-down version of the CR-78: the CR-68. Although it had the same pre-set rhythms, it lacked programmability and was missing the METALLIC BEAT, TAMBOURINE and GUIRO sounds.
Famous users include Gary Numan (Mainly his Dance album and also live), Genesis (Duchess) Phil Collins (In the Air Tonight) and of course, the most famous of all: Many Others. Blondie (Heart of Glass intro) is often attributed to the CR-78, but a quick listen tells me that it isn’t. The sounds are not the same. It’s possibly the RHUMBA rhythm from a Home Organ or another Drum Machine.
The Model used to produce this Kontakt Instrument was an eBay purchase, and right at the top-end of the going rate. It is absolutely immaculate however. You could take it back to 1979, box it up and sell it as new. I’d take it back and give it to myself as a present of course!

I have a lot of reverb units – I love them! They fascinate me because they take your sound and they put it into a 3D space, and they all do it in their own unique way. They have evolved so much over the years, starting off with analog springs and metal plates, through early and very clever digital algorithmic processors and onwards through the growing bit depths. My favourites are the EMT 140 stereo plate, the Lexicon 224, Yamaha Rev1 and the Telefunken Echomixer mono spring thing. I bought a Roland R880 years ago really cheap which was their attempt (in 1988) at a supa-mega-reverb and it is an extremely underrated unit actually. So I took it home so I could experiment putting a Buchla through it. I had a hunch that they would sound good together! I spent a few hours re-aquainting myself with its shocking operating system (which was like that scene in Contact where they build the spaceship based on blueprints deciphered from an alien language downloaded from outer space)

The RS-09 is an analog string and organ synthesizer (similar to the Saturn-09 which only produced an organ sound). It’s old, it’s cheap and they’re usually worth finding! The string sound and organ sounds are nice, fatty analog sounds. The organ and string sections can be played simultaneously or individually. An ensemble/chorus effect and external sound input are welcome features. But aside from all this, there isn’t much else left to this synth. A simple 2-vco architecture with simple and limited editable parameters, no patch memory and a small keyboard.
There are three versions of this unit. The one shown above is a V.3. The differences are mainly cosmetic and in the control surface; the V.3 uses touch-switches, the V.1 uses rockers and tends to be more reliable due to that. This instrument can be found for around $100, and they could add a nice flavor to any modern analog-electronic keyboard studio.

Unlike its TR cousins it does not have individual drum tone outputs. There is no drum tone editing capability either. It does however feature extensive MIDI implementation, even the pads will transmit MIDI data. The 505 works well with a computer and sequencer or as a stand alone drum machine. It is extremely basic and unexciting but does make a good starter or play-along drum machine.

Synth bass lines on a Roland System 100
Background information:
I”III” plays the Roland system 100 ( 101 and 102) . Just trying out some baseline. It easily turns into EBM with these machines. Sorry for the bad audio, but we think that this is better than a lot of other stuff that is out there, and we will do better in the future. Sequencer used is the Oberkorn from Analogue Solution, recommended if you like experimental stuff. Drums from Roland TR-626. FX: Korg signal delay SD200 , and then there are some reverb coming out of Boss RX-100 .

Brief about the Boss RX-100:
This analog stereo reverb was available in the early 80s. Somewhat unorthodox to see that one channel has input and output jacks on the front while the other channel has input and output jacks placed at the back of the enclosure. Stereo output can be generated from a mono input signal by phase shifting one channel 180 degrees. This is controlled using the mode switch on the front panel.

An old demo song from 2007, that consists of Roland Jupiter-4 sounds with the use of three effects pedals. The drum samples are orginally from a ZOOM drum machine. The drums have been arranged at the computer, everything else was played by hand and recorded in realtime.
