Over the last few years on the night before the Hampshire Jam electronic music festival a special ‘Pre-Jam’ event has taken place. This year was a much more informal affair. The rules were simple, only 1 piece of sound producing kit plus some fx per musician.
The result was a very laid back experimental ambient affair lasting approx 2.5 hours. This clip shows the opening 10 mins.

The Belgian label Alfa Matrix has announced what seems to be a real “who is who in the current EBM scene” boxset uniting no less than 112 artists bringing rare are exclusive tracks. New timbres from analog sequencer
Using analog sequencers in a modular synth you can create some interesting unique timbres. You need to clock the sequencer really fast with a VCO, since there are 8 steps in this particular sequencer it needs to run 8 times as fast as the note you want to play. Some analog sequencers can run faster than others, yielding higher pitched notes. The highest notes you hear in this example is the highest the synthesizers.com Q119 sequencer can play. By changing the voltage of the individual steps you change the timbre of the sound. And since there’s three channels you can use the two others to control other things, like a filter maybe?
NIN reissues their 1989 debut
Nine Inch Nails have reissued their 1989 debut album “Pretty Hate Machine”. The material was remastered by Trent Reznor and sound engineer Tom Baker “for a greatly improved sonic experience” as Reznor said earlier. In addition, Rob Sheridan reinterpreted Gary Talpas’ original cover.
The 10-track LP also includes a bonus 11th song, a cover of Queen’s “Get Down, Make Love”, which featured on their 1990 single “Sin”. It’s being sold at real giveaway prices, so order your copy now before the prices go up. You can buy it now at Amazon USA (direct link). Other stores will follow including iTunes.
Reznor had this to say about the remastering process: “It’s been an interesting trip watching the fate of this record float from one set of hands to another (a long and depressing story). Line 6 has informed us that the MIDI Mobilizer, a MIDI interface for Apple iPod touch, iPhone and iPad, is now officially supported by 12 apps.
MIDI Mobilizer connects directly with any Apple iPod touch, iPhone or iPad and, coupled with MIDI Memo Recorder (a free app available for download on the Apple App Store), allows musicians to play, record, and backup MIDI data.
Sonic State’s look at the MIDI Mobilizer highlighted the devices potential, much of which is just now being realized.
