The Performer is a polyphonic analog Strings and Brass machine produced at the end of the 1970’s by the Italian synth company. It is slightly compact with just 49 keys. But it is fully polyphonic – you can play all 49 notes simultaneously! Programming is simple and clearly laid-out with just 15 sliders and a few buttons. A solid black chassis and wood end-cheeks round out this classic and often overlooked string machine.
The Performer is best remembered for its Strings. A simple 3-band equalizer with high, mid and low sliders can be used to give the strings shimmering sparkle or moody dark timbres. The Strings section uses two oscillators per voice with 8′ and 16′ settings. Simple Attack and Sustain sliders give you some control of your string’s envelope settings.
The Brass section is less exciting. It uses a single oscillator with just a square wave to generate a weak Brass sound. It has a low-pass VCF filter with resonance, but it too is pretty weak. Simple Attack and Decay sliders control its limited envelope settings too.
The LFO is pretty nice, with delay length, rate and depth control. It can modulate both Brass and String sections and can be routed either to the VCF or pitch. There are three outputs on the back: main output, brass output and signal output (for external processing) as well as CV and Gate connections.

Here is some ambient music generated from a single sample in real-time. The combination of pitch shifting and feedback makes for giant percolating pads. Enjoy! All of the sounds are being sampled with the internal mic and speaker. I live in a noisy place so there is a lot of texture added with each level of feedback. This video features WerkBench 1.1.0 which should be out in the first few weeks of August. I am making use of panning, high-pass filters, and decay settings for each step. These will be available soon!
OP-1 as a control Surface for Abelton – Basic Setup

I’m using a Dell PC (running Windows XP) in this example.
Initially the OP-1 wasn’t recognised. It took a connection through a powered USB hub
before I saw it in the system.
Check that Abelton can see it:
In Windows XP it is recognised as a “USB Audio Device”
Options/Properties/….Under midi ports click Track, Sync,remote.
In this demo I sample the OP-1 directly into an Abelton Audio channel.
It’s triggered from the midi send channel…. playing Calvin Harris featuring Ne-Yo – “Let’s Go”.

This tune by Jarre is one of the most joyful tunes in the world and always makes me smile. Therefore, I picked this one as of the very few covers I performed at my mini-tour in May 2012. This video was recorded live at my show in Doo-Bop Club, Vaasa, 12th of May 2012.
The song was performed using only analog synthesizers, either played live or sequenced. The performance was recorded line in to one of the cameras. The ambience in the club was recorded using the built-in microphones on two of the remaining cameras and mixed together with the line signal.
Equipment used in this song: Arp Odyssey Mk II; Korg Polysix, Poly 61, Mono/Poly, Micro-preset M500; Roland TR-808, Juno 60, Alpha Juno 1&2; Moog Source, Touched-by-sound DRM1, Oberheim Matrix 6R, Yamaha RM1x (only for MIDI sequencing), Behringer DDX3216, Lexicon MPX500, as well as a midi patchbay and additional preamps for my mixer. Cameras: Canon HF100 (x2), HF200 and HF406.

Dr Benway has published this new video featuring Moby´s classic song on a Casio keyboard. The Casio SK-5 is a sampling keyboard introduced by Casio in 1987. Samples may be gathered from a built-in microphone or a line-level input from another source. The keyboard was rebranded as the Realistic Concertmate-650 for sale at Radio Shack stores.
