Creating the Enjoy the Silence (Depeche Mode) bass line via Oberkorn MK3 and Telemark Synthesizer

Here’s a recreation of the classic bass line from Depeche Mode’s “Enjoy the Silence” (Violator!) using DM-style methodologies.
By utilising a step sequencer and a flexible analogue synth (Analogue Solutions Oberkorn & Telemark respectively), you can produce the moving / transitional effects inherent in a complex bass sequence such as this one.
Given the timing of the pattern, the Oberkorn was MIDI-stepped manually (see Midi-Stepping an Analogue Sequencer video for more information) and the pitch transposition was handled via MIDI as well. Alternatively, the pitch could be played live via MIDI.
The key is to take advantage of the precise opening and closing of the filter via Oberkorn CVB.
All settings will ultimately be approximate, as analogue synths will differ from machine to machine. Use the settings as starting points and then tweak away!

Depeche Mode will release “Remixes 2: 81-11” on Mute Records on 6 June
From Mute comes the news that Depeche Mode will release “Remixes 2: 81-11” on Mute Records on 6 June 2011. This new compilation includes classic mixes from M83, UNKLE, Trentemøller, François Kervorkian and Dan The Automator, alongside all-new mixes from Stargate, Eric Prydz, Karlsson & Winnberg (Miike Snow) and Röyksopp. The expanded editions will furthermore include exclusive remixes by former band members Vince Clarke and Alan Wilder. it’s the first time either artist has remixed tracks for their former colleagues.
“Remixes 2: 81-11″ will be available in two different CD formats: a single and triple disc version, as well as a download and as a 6 x 12” vinyl LP box set.

Depeche community in discussion – fake or real
Among true Depeche Mode fans there is an active discussion whether a recently discovered (and uploaded on SoundCloud) tape is a real demo tape or just a fake. It is supposed to be the first demo tape ever released by DM featuring the absolute first versions of songs like Photographic and Ice Machine. No news from the band has been released to whether it is true or not, but check out the links below and judge for yourself.

New Depeche Mode remix album in April
The new Depeche Mode remix album will be released early April 2011.
For those who didn’t know yet; remix duties have been executed by Alan Wilder (Recoil and ex-Depeche Mode – “In chains”), Vince Clarke (Yazoo, Erasure, ex-Depeche Mode – “Behind the wheel”), Duran Duran’s Nick Rhodes, New Order’s Bernard Sumner, Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt of Miike Snow. Other unconfirmed names which have popped up include Aphex Twin, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs!, Brandon Flowers of The Killers and Arcade Fire.

Get ready for the Mute synth event
On 13-14 May, the British label Mute will host Short Circuit Electronic Music Festival at the Roundhouse in London. Performances and unique collaborations with the past as well as current and prospective Mute artists will be interspersed with discussions, workshops, screenings and installations to celebrate the Mutes successful and influential time as a label.

Mute founded by Daniel Miller in 1978 and has since signed now world-famous artists such as Depeche Mode, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Goldfrapp, Erasure and Moby as well as new talents that Yeasayer and soon the album in question Josh T. Pearson.

Andy Fletcher gets ready for new DJ tour
Depeche Mode’s Andy Fletcher has revealed how psyched he is about jetting off for forthcoming DJ tour, which starts later this month. The long-time member of the synthpop group will kick off his journey on 29 January in Bucharest, Romania, before visiting countries such as the Philippines, Australia, Singapore, Indonesia and China up to 19 March. He will play a lot of new remixes, presumably from the new upcoming remix CD. On the Depeche Mode website, he said: “I am really excited to be coming to a lot of the places that Depeche didn’t get to visit on the last tour.”
Belgian fans need not worry about Fletch – as he’s often known – leaving you out. He will hit your shores on 19 March to play at the Belzik Festival in Herve.

UK synthpop act Client splits up?
The British electropop trio Client announced via a press release just before Christmas that front woman Sarah Blackwood is leaving the band to focus on other projects. Kate Holmes is reportedly already in the process of recruiting a replacement.
Sarah Blackwood broke through in Dubstar (along with Chris Wilkie) back in 1993 when she replaced original vocalist Steve Hillier, and then become part of the Client, together with Kate Holmes and Emily Man at the beginning of the 2000s.
Client was the first band that was signed to Depeche Mode keyboardist Andy Fletcher’s record label Toast Hawaii and have been following the self-titled debut album “Client” from 2003 released three full length albums – “City” (2004), “Heartland” (2007) and later “Command “from 2009.

Side-Line Music Awards are now ready, each year Side-Line nominates the best songs, bands and acts in the electro, synth, EBM etc space and now the final results are here, as voted by the Side-Line readers. And it seems Recoil got a fair share of the prices

Duran Duran to remix Depeche Mode
New Order’s Bernard Sumner, Alan Wilder and Vince Clarke were already confirmed to remix Depeche Mode for an upcoming remix album, and now Duran Duran states in a post on their Facebook page that Nick Rhodes, Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt (Miike Snow) remixed “Personal Jesus”
The remix album is expected to be released next year. More news soon.
